Background Information: The Last Word
[Top]
The Last Word is a short story by author Graham Greene, written in 1988. It first appeared in The Independent, but can also be found in collections of his short fiction, notably the Penguin edition of The Last Word & Other Stories, for which it is the lead story. The story, written toward the end of Greenes life, reflects his frustration at the declining influence of religion, particularly Catholicism, in the modern world. The story revolves around the last pope, John XXIX, who was overthrown more than twenty years earlier with the establishment of a new world government under General Megrim. The pope is now a frail old man, who lives in obscurity under a moderate form of house arrest, ignored by his neighbors & forbidden to keep any religious items. All he has left is a book, possibly a Bible, that he has managed to hide & a crucifix with an arm broken off.
Consumer DVD Review

The DVD states Richard Dreyfuss as the first name & Chazz Palminteri as the lead charcters;if you combine both their performances it is less than 5 minutes - very short cameos. This film really has little to do with them .

This did put me off the film greatly, being a fan of any film Chazz has graced I was very disappointed with his short role as the Mob boss. So saying, Timothy Hutton & Joe Pantoliano are very good in their roles & they do help make the film watchable. The story lacks depth & the director spends slightly too long on the main sex scene in the film for my taste .

As I said, Joe Pantoliano makes a convincing Mob thug & Timothy Hutton also puts in a good performance. Worth a look for the good lead performances & for the 2 cameos.
