Background Information: Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 musical film directed by Baz Luhrmann, which tells the story of a young British poet, Christian, who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret, Satine. It uses the colourful musical setting of Montmartre, a district in Paris, France. Some plot details, specifically the poor artist & his dying lover, bear relation to the opera La Bohème, including references to the Bohemian subculture. The plot was also inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus in the Underworld. The screenplay was written by Baz Luhrmann & Craig Pearce. exuberant music, colourful visuals, elaborate sets & costumes, simple story line with a simple conflict, heroine with melodramatic disease, two-dimensional characters & the songs themselves, adopted from contemporary musicians. It includes a popular Hindi movie song near the end. Other songs it samples include Nature Boy by Nat King Cole, Lady Marmalade by LaBelle, Madonnas Material Girl, the titular song of The Sound of Music & Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana--all within the films first twenty minutes. You either love it or you hate it. Im one of those people who love it. The camera work may be overdone in the opening minutes but as the film progresses it slows down to a more enjoyable speed which allows you to take in the full splendor of the lush sets & costumes. The music is wonderfully reworked into a dramtic style & is surprisingly well delivered by the cast. The two leads both have good voices but the actor who surpised me the most was Jim Broadbent, who will make you laugh out loud in Like a Virgin but who is actually quite touching in The Show Must Go On. The plot, though admitably paper-thin, is relitivly involving & I found myself caring for the fate of these doomed, if somewhat shallow, lovers. The reason for losing a star is partly because the villian of the piece who, dispite the hammy nature of the whole film, is over the top & totally unbelievable but mostly because there are far better versions of this DVD available. If you enjoyed this film I suggest you buy the two-disk DVD or better still, a package of all three of Baz Luhrmans films, which are as good as, if not better than this one.
