Background Information: Labyrinth
[Top]
Labyrinth is a 1986 fantasy film directed by Jim Henson. Puppets play most of the roles. Two notable exceptions are Sarah & the Goblin King, Jareth. Sarah wishes for goblins to take away her screaming baby brother, but when they do she must find her way to the center of a fantastic labyrinth & bring him back. Jareth tries to confuse, frighten & seduce her, but she learns to rely on her own strength & overcomes his power. Many of the settings & creatures in the film were based on designs by Brian Froud, who had previously collaborated with Jim Henson on The Dark Crystal. Froud & screenwriter Terry Jones later collaborated on a book depicting some of the incidental creatures from the film. Frouds infant son played Sarahs brother in the movie. The filmmakers acknowledged several influences, including Alices Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz & the works of Maurice Sendak & M C Escher. Some of the puppeteers went on to work for computer animation studios. Screenplay. Terry Jones, from a story by Jim Henson & Dennis Lee.

Sarah rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother & contend with parents who dont understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realises her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins & the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film & is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Hensons imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to childrens author & illustrator Maurice Sendak, & the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living MC Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, & set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucass other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up.
