Background Information: Xena
[Top]
Xena: Warrior Princess is a television series which aired from 1995 to 2001. The Legendary Journeys. Set in a fantasy ancient Greece, the series told the adventures of former Hercules villain Xena, a reformed warlord, on a quest to redeem her past sins. Xena was accompanied on her travels by Gabrielle, a young girl who became her best friend & most trusted ally. The series was filmed in New Zealand. The show freely borrowed names & themes from various mythologies around the world, but adapted them to suit the demands of the storyline. Many of the series devoted followers, nevertheless, thought they were witnessing recreations of genuine Greek mythology, a tribute to the compelling action adventure of the storylines. The show was a mixture of styles, ranging from high melodrama in one episode to slapstick comedy in another. It was also hinted that Xena & Gabrielle were lovers. This was left deliberately ambiguous, leading to much heated debate over what became known as the Subtext. Posters Of Xena

Lovers of Xena who have not seen the last episode--contained on this DVD--dont! This is the last of the series. For me that last episode ruined Xena for me. I had bought all the other DVDs first & saved this one for last. I moved to France before Xenas end so I had never seen these episodes. Now, possibly I will never be able to enjoy Xena again after this last episode. For the 6 seasons of Xena, the plot builds, the characters develop & one has that its leading up to something. If you want to leave open that window of hope & possibity for your favorite characters, dont watch this. Xena doesnt not finish in a blaze of glory but defeat, & the Xena-Gabrielle relationship ends definitively . The plots are thin & underdeveloped. Its never clear why this happens. Its badly written & misogynistic, whereas the first episodes of Xena were so full of love, & hope, & equality for everybody, & doing good. This last set of episodes is dark , violent & sad. Already, the 6th season is lacking because they are years into future so all their old relationships & friends are gone. To sum up, it was a big disappointment.
