Complicity
Background Information: Complicity [Top] Complicity is a novel by Scottish author Iain Banks. It was published in 1994. // Its two main characters are Cameron Colley, a journalist on a Scottish newspaper called The Caledonian, which resembles The Scotsman & a serial murderer whose identity is a mystery. The passages dealing with the journalist are written in the first person & those dealing with the murderer in the second person. The events take place mostly in & around Edinburgh. Colley is a Gonzo journalist with a cocaine habit, living in Edinburgh. He also smokes tobacco & cannabis, drinks copious amounts of alcohol, plays computer games & has adventurous sex with a married woman, Yvonne. He regrets his addictions & misdemeanours & tries half-heartedly to give them up occasionally. He reflects on his awful experience of witnessing the aftermath of the massacre at the Highway of Death in the Gulf War & covers the deployment of HMS Vanguard, Britains first Trident nuclear missile submarine. He thinks he has a scoop when he receives anonymous phone calls about a series of mysterious deaths.
Consumer DVD Review [Top] This felt more like an ITV drama than a feature film, but never mind because it was a deep enough plot & engaging enough characters to keep me interested all the way through. The revelations are pretty shocking when tehy eventually come, but the mystery element is too easily guessed, & the switching between past & present was far too underplayed in my view. I think the main problem with this film is the apparent randomness of the murders until eventually the pattern is revealed. There is some kind of technical problem with the sound, I found it very hard to make out what the hell people were saying half the time - its not just the scottish accent but the fact it was muffled or mumbled a lot. Perhaps advisbale to watch with subtitles on. Good in some ways, watchable but, ultimately far too TV-drama-ish.
