Wagner: Die Walkure -- Bayreuth
Background Information: Wagner [Top]
Background Information: Die Walkure [Top] Die Walküre is the second of the four operas that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen, by Richard Wagner. It premiered at the Munich Court Theatre on June 26, 1870, with August Kindermann as Wotan, Heinrich Vogl as Siegmund, Therese Vogl as Sieglinde & Sophie Stehle as Brünnhilde. It is the source of the famous piece Ride of the Valkyries. It is worthwhile to understand that this act hinges on hidden identities that are known to the audience. The program tells even the first-time viewer the names of the characters, and, from his leitmotif & his covering his missing eye with his hat, the stranger or old man & Wotan can be recognized as one. Siegmund & Sieglinde each withhold their own name until the acts climax. During a raging storm, Siegmund seeks shelter at the house of the warrior Hunding. Hunding is not present & Siegmund is greeted by Sieglinde, Hundings unhappy wife. Siegmund tells her that he is fleeing from enemies. After taking a drink of mead, he moves to leave, claiming to be cursed by misfortune. Posters Of Die WalkureBiography: Matti Salminen [Top] Matti Salminen is a Finnish bass singer.
