Given that for Russians, Pushkins poem Eugene Onegin is sort of like Hamlet, Beowulf & Lord Byrons Don Juan rolled into one melancholy tale of lost love & ennui among the gentry, its surprising Russian filmmakers have balked at adapting the film. Having taken a stage production of Hamlet to Russia where it was rapturously received, self-confessed Slavophile actor Ralph Fiennes must have thought he was making reparation when he executive-produced & starred in this faithful adaptation of the film. With Martha Fiennes on board as director, its something of a family affair with more than a little of the solemnity one often discovers in personal projects. Pushkins romanticism comes across amply, but little of his ferocious wit or, inevitably, the authorial voice that makes the poem so compelling, even in translation. Ralph Fiennes typecasts himself in the title role: his Onegin is yet another of the actors wintry, haunted lovers in period dress . The character, a jaded roué from St. Petersburg, summers in the countryside where he inadvertently wins the heart of the impulsive Tatyana . Onegins casual attitude to her love leads to a tragic duel , & years later a chance meeting stirs up feelings of regret, triumph & moral queasiness. Tears well in eyes, letters are sent & read, furs are ruffled in the snow. This is the high-brow end of costume drama: patrician in its literary purity, & rather admirable in its restraint & good taste, if a little dull. If youre not a fan of genre, you might start screaming for Steven Seagal to descend from a helicopter & start spraying the impeccable sets with an Uzi.

Ralph Nathaniel Fiennes is a British actor. Born in Suffolk, he is the older brother of actor Joseph Fiennes. Having trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1988. He is the only actor ever to have won a Tony Award for playing Hamlet on Broadway. In 2001 Fiennes received the William Shakespeare Award from the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington. Fiennes film debut was in 1992, when he played Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights opposite Juliette Binoche. But it was in the following year that he became known internationally, portraying Amon Goeth, the amoral Nazi concentration camp commander in Schindlers List, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1994 he portrayed New England aristocrat Charles Van Doren in Quiz Show & in 1996 he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for The English Patient.
