Raging Bull is a 1980 film directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta, a temperamental & paranoid but tenacious boxer who alienates himself from his friends & family. Also featured in the film are Joe Pesci as La Mottas brother & manager, Joey & Cathy Moriarty as his abused wife. The film was distributed by United Artists ; studio executives were initially reluctant to go ahead with the project as they feared that the extreme profanity & violence in the screenplay would draw an X from the MPAA ratings board. However, Scorsese & DeNiro reworked the script & were able to proceed. Robert De Niro won the Academy Award for Best Actor, his first for a leading role. The film has been deemed culturally significant by the United States Library of Congress & selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Posters Of Raging Bull
Editorial DVD Review

While every Martin Scorsese fan has her or his favourite movie, few would argue that Raging Bull is one of his very best. It strikes a near-perfect balance between formal experiment & emotional content, delivered through the compelling true-life story of heavyweight boxer Jake La Motta , & frequently scores high on critic & audience polls of the best films of the 20th century.

The traditional rise-and-fall biopic structure serves as a vehicle for a brutally tender distillation of most of the directors favourite themes . Onscreen, it features two of his favourite leading actors, Robert De Niro , & Joe Pesci, as La Motta & his brother Joey respectively. Trapped in a bubble of emotional & verbal inarticulacy, Jake & Joeys constant, repetitive bickering , is counterpointed by Jakes eloquence in the ring, manifestly the only place where he can express himself. As the title suggests, the guys an animal, a real antihero in satin shorts.

The smouldering, statuesque Cathy Moriarty is on hand as Jakes long-suffering wife Vickie, as are a whole posse of Scorsese regulars. All are aided & abetted by several of Scorseses most gifted & vital off-screen collaborators: screenwriter Paul Schrader , cinematographer Michael Chapman , & the indispensable Thelma Schoonmaker, editor of almost every Scorsese film since his feature, Whos That Knocking at My Door?. They dont come much better than this.

Biography: Martin Scorsese
[Top]
Martin Scorsese is an American film director. Critics & film scholars have called him the greatest living American director & several of his movies occupy spots on the American Film Institute s list of greatest movies & the Internet Movie Database s list of the top 250 movies. Although he has much admiration & one of the most recognizable names in the film industry, he has never won an Academy Award. Scorsese originally planned to become a priest & many of his movies bear the stamp of Catholic upbringing. He was bitten by the movie bug at a young age & has admitted to becoming obsessed with movies, an obsession apparent in the three hour & 45 minute long 1995 documentary film A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies. A sickly child, he spent a lot of time recovering at home, watching the goings-on in the streets from his upstairs bedroom window. A great deal of his childhood was spent in movie theaters & he resolved to become a filmmaker when he grew older. Posters Of Cape Fear
