Sphere
Background Information: Sphere [Top] Sphere is a science fiction movie, released on Friday, February 13, 1998, starring Dustin Hoffman as Dr Norman Johnson, Sharon Stone as Dr Elizabeth Beth Halperin & Samuel L Jackson as Dr Harry Adams. 1000 feet below the ocean, navy divers discover an object half-a-mile long. A crack team of scientists are deployed to the site in Deepsea Habitats. What they find boggles the mind as they discover a perfect metal sphere. What is the secret behind the sphere? Will they survive the mysterious manifestations? Who or what is creating these? They may never live to find out. In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface of the water, a huge vessel rests on the ocean floor. Rushed to the scene is a group of American scientists who descend to the depths of the sea to investigate this astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations & mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a massive spaceship, undamaged from its fall from the sky—and at least three hundred years old.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] From yet another derivative science fiction novel by Michael Crichton comes Sphere, an equally derivative & flaccid movie, in which three top Hollywood stars struggle to squeeze tension & excitement out of material that doesnt match their talents. Youre supposed to find awe & mystery in Crichtons story about a team of scientists & scholars who discover a 300-year-old alien spacecraft deep on the ocean floor, but mostly you feel that this is all much ado about nothing. The exploration team consists of a psychologist , mathematician , biochemist , & an astrophysicist , & when they enter the alien ship they discover a mysterious sphere inside. What they dont know is that the sphere has the power to manipulate their thoughts & perceptions, & before long the scientists undersea habitat is a veritable haunted house of frightening visions & creeping paranoia. Who can be trusted? What is the spheres purpose, & why is it on the ocean floor? Sphere makes some attempt to answer these questions, but the film is a mess, & it leads to one of the most anticlimactic endings of any science fiction film ever made. There are moments of high intensity & psychological suspense, & the stellar cast works hard to boost the talky screenplay. But its clear that this was a hurried production , & as a result Sphere looks & feels like a film that wasnt quite ready for the cameras. Though its by no means a waste of time, its undeniably disappointing.
