Background Information: The X Files
[Top]
The X-Files was a popular 1990s American science fiction television series created by Chris Carter. The show aired first-run episodes on the FOX network. Premiering in 1993, its ground-breaking success was due mostly to its stars, David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson. Duchovny played Fox Mulder & Anderson played Dana Scully, two FBI agents tasked with investigating paranormal phenomena. With plots spanning alien conspiracy theories & high-level governmental cover-ups, the show mimicked episodic elements found in earlier shows such as The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone & the cult show Twin Peaks. The series became a surprise run-away success, with a devoted following. Fans of show became known as X-Philes or eXcers. The X-Files struck a unique balance between rationalism & mysticism, horror & wonder; its stories were told like police procedurals investigating the paranormal. The series popularized the catch-phrases Trust No One & The Truth Is Out There & fosters a huge fan-based following to this day.
Background Information: Providence
[Top]
Providence was an NBC television series starring Melina Kanakaredes. The show ran from January 8, 1999 until December 20, 2002, for five seasons. The show revolved around Dr Sydney Hansen, who wished to leave her glamorous job in Beverly Hills as a plastic surgeon to rich people, so she could go back to her hometown of Providence, Rhode Island & be with her family. Concetta Tomei & Mike Farrell played her parents & Paula Cale & Seth Peterson played her siblings. Sydneys mother died in the first episode & her appearances to Sydney in spirit form comprised much of the series. The show ended rather abruptly, with a two-parter wedding episode. NBC called this Providences winter finale, fully expecting to bring it back in the spring or autumn of 2003, but these plans were eventually scrapped when some cast members, including Kanakaredes, opted out of producing a sixth season.

Editorial DVD Review

As with earlier releases, The X-Files: Providence splices together two episodes, Provenance & Providence, into a pseudo-movie. Again, the results fall way below the series average as the long-dead alien conspiracy business is flogged, with a lot of running around & ominous rumbling still not adding up to anything like an actual story. FBI agent Neal McDonaugh inexplicably survives a flaming motorcycle crash, leaving behind brass rubbings taken from an alien spaceship, then shows up & tries to murder Scullys psychokinetic baby, who is promptly kidnapped by a UFO cult.

In Part 2, Scully & Reyes fend off enemies & friends within the bureau as they track down the cultists, who are having trouble with a spaceship theyve dug up, & a typical pointless climax has things happen without the characters doing anything to contribute. Even at this late, post-Duchovny stage in the game, The X-Files has turned out some fine stand-alone episodes, but these dreary wallowings go a long way towards explaining why only diehards are still watching. After the child says I made this at the end of the credits, its becoming very hard not to shout well, clean it up then.
