Good Will Hunting is a 1997 film, set in greater Boston, Massachusetts, which tells the story of a troubled young genius who works as a janitor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, even though his knowledge of & facility with mathematics is superior to that of most of the schools faculty. It also stars Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård, Minnie Driver & Casey Affleck. The movie was written by Damon & Affleck & directed by Gus Van Sant. The widely-spread rumor that Good Will Hunting was written by legendary screenwriter William Goldman was refuted in Goldmans book Which Lie Did I Tell? More Adventures In The Screen Trade as a joke that got out of hand. It won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role & Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, & actors Matt Damon & Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit Good Will Hunting triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director saves a script marred by vanity & clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast . Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for womens melodrama in the 1930s & 40s: Hes crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom.

Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet maths genius who ignores his gift in favour of nightly boozing & fighting with South Boston buddies . While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard & reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor . Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professors former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor & patient are haunted by the past and, as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The films beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Afflecks clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams & Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection & feeling for one another.

Matt Damon is an American film actor. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He shares an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with his friend Ben Affleck for the movie Good Will Hunting. He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the same film. He founded Project Greenlight with Affleck to find & fund worthwhile film projects from novice filmmakers. In 2004 his uncle became the oldest person at 70 years old to swim the English Channel. Damon also produced an audiobook, reading Howard Zinn s A Peoples History of the United States. Robin McLaurin Williams is a multi-award-winning American actor & comedian who was born in Chicago, Illinois. He first achieved notice for his stand-up routines in San Francisco. His first major acting role was in the television series Mork & Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982. The majority of his acting career has been for cinema, although he has made some memorable performances on stage as well. He is known for his wild improv skills & impersonations. He is a talented mimic & can jump in & out of characters at an extremely fast pace. Many of his roles have been comic. He has also starred in serious movies & in 1998 he won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for his role as a psychiatrist in Good Will Hunting. Robin Williams & his wife Marsha Garces Williams founded the Windfall Foundation, a philanthropic organization to raise money for many different charities. Robin Williams devotes much of his energy doing work for charities, including the Comic Relief fund-raising efforts. Gus Van Sant Jr. is an American film director, photographer, musician & author. He has appeared in a cameo on screen in Kevin Smiths Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back & began as a commercial director in the Pacific Northwest. Van Sant was nominated for a Best Director Academy Award in 1998 for Good Will Hunting & won Best Director & Palme dOr at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for his film Elephant. He has written the screenplays for most of his early movies as well as a novel Pink ISBN 0385493533. A book of his photography has also been published called 108 Portraits ISBN 0944092225. Some of the movies he has written & / or directed include an adaptation of Tom Robbins novel Even Cowgirls get the Blues, which featured a truly one-of-a-kind cast & My Own Private Idaho, also starring Keanu Reeves as well as the late River Phoenix.
