Run Lola Run is a 1998 film by German screenwriter & director Tom Tykwer, starring Franka Potente as Lola. It is an uncoventional film, in that it covers the same twenty-minute span of time three times, each differing in small details that in turn lead the story to radically different outcomes. The script follows a spiral structure. Spirals are frequently used as a visual motif. The film, particularly with its time limit & multiple lives concept, owes something to video games. Lolas boyfriend, Manni, is involved in a smuggling operation. Mannis final role in a particular job is the transport of 100,000 marks to his boss, Ronnie. Lola was supposed to drive Manni to the meeting, but her motorcycle was stolen earlier in the day. Manni resorts to public transportation when Lola doesnt appear, but he accidentally leaves the money on a subway train. if he doesnt have the money when he meets Ronnie at noon, Manni will be killed. Its difficult to create a film thats fast paced, exciting & aesthetically appealing without diluting its dialogue. Run Lola Run, directed & written by Tom Tykwer, is an enchanting balance of pace & narrative, creating a universal parable that leaps over cultural barriers. This is the story of young Lola & her boyfriend Manni . In the space of 20 minutes, they must come up with 100,000 deutsche marks to pay back a seedy gangster, who will be less than forgiving when he finds out that Manni incompetently lost his cash to an opportunistic vagrant. Lola, confronted with one obstacle after another, rides an emotional roller coaster in her high-speed efforts to help the hapless Manni, attempting to extract the cash first from her double-dealing father , & then by any means necessary. From this point nothing goes right for either protagonist, but just when you think youve figured out the movie, the director introduces a series of brilliant existential twists that boggle the mind. Tykwer uses rapid camera movements & innovative pauses to explore the theme of cause & effect. Accompanied by a pulse-pounding soundtrack, we follow Lola through every turn & every heartbreak as she & Manni rush forward on a collision course with fate. There were a variety of original & intelligent films released in 1999, but perhaps none were as witty & clever as this little gem, one of the best foreign films of the year.
