Battlestar Galactica
Background Information: Battlestar Galactica [Top] Battlestar Galactica is an American science fiction movie & television series, produced in 1978 by Glen Larson & starring Lorne Greene, Richard Hatch & Dirk Benedict. It was remade in 2003 by the Sci-Fi Channel with Edward James Olmos stepping into Lorne Greenes role of Commander Adama. A weekly series on Sci-Fi followed in January 2005. Battlestar Galactica was set in a distant part of the galaxy in an age described as the seventh millennium of time. Twelve colonies of humans had been fighting a thousand-year war against the android race of Cylons, who sought to exterminate all of humanity. The Cylons unexpectedly sued for peace, through the diplomatic channel of human councilor Baltar. In reality, though, Baltar had betrayed humanity for personal power & glory; Baltar had lulled into complacency the human fleet of military vessels, called battlestars, against a Cylon enemy with no true plans for peace. At the time I was a big fan, but its showing its age, both in terms of special effects, & the storylines. It is still well worth watching.
The one thing that spoils it for me is Boxey & the Daggit. The part is well casted at first , but its hard to believe a 6 year old would be allowed on the bridge of a battleship or to go on away missions, even if he does manage to hide in an unguarded transporter. If you can tolerate boxey & the daggit then the rest of the story lines are good. The worst thing is that the last episode just ends, it leaves you wanting more. Due I assume to budget constraints the series was cut without giving it a nice clean ending. There was a spin off series some time after the original, but that is not included in this 7 disc boxset. Its hard to review this without comparing it with the new series. Whilst based on the same original idea, these are very different. If you want family entertainment then you want the original series, but if you prefer modern special effects, a bit more action, & are not watching with children then the new series has more on offer. For me there is a place for both. The Bonus material on the 7th DVD is average at best. You get to see what the actors look like when they are older. There are cut scenes, some of which are good, but padded with less interesting ones . The most interesting part of the Bonus DVD is finding out how they created the daggit. Worth getting for that trip down memory lane. Biography: Lorne Greene [Top] Lorne Greene was a Canadian actor best known for two iconic roles on American television. Greene was born in Ottawa, Ontario & began acting while attending Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He gave up on a career in chemical engineering & upon graduation found a job as a radio broadcaster for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He was assigned as the principal newscaster on the CBCs flagship news program, The National. The CBC gave him the nickname The Voice of Canada. However, constantly distressing war news following Canadas entry into World War II in 1939 caused many listeners to call him The Voice of Doom instead. Many Canadians who remember the World War II years can recall listening to Lorne Greene read the latest war news on the radio. The first of his American television roles was as family patriarch on the long-running series Bonanza. His portrayal of Ben Cartwright made Greene a household name. He received the role after having turned in a highly-regarded performance as Big Brother in a production of Nineteen Eighty-Four for the Columbia Broadcasting System.
