Minority Report - Single Disc Edition
Background Information: Minority Report [Top] Minority Report is a 2002 film by Steven Spielberg starring Tom Cruise, Max von Sydow, Samantha Morton & Colin Farrell. It is loosely based on the Philip K Dick short story of the same name. Minority Report is one of several movies based on stories by Dick. The film renders a much more detailed view of a near-term future world than that present in the original short story, with depictions of a number of technologies related to the movies themes. The film also omits certain story details. While the films roots make it a science fiction film, it mixes in elements of a number of different genres, particularly film noir, mystery & action / adventure. Minority Report is set in Washington, DC during the year 2054. Thanks to three precogs & technology built around their ability to see murders before they happen, the city has gone six years without a murder. Posters Of Minority ReportEditorial DVD Review [Top] Full of morally flawed characters, & shot in grainy desaturated colours, Steven Spielbergs Minority Report is futuristic film noir with a far-fetched B-movie plot thats so feverishly presented the audience never gets a chance to ponder its many improbabilities. Based on a short story by Philip K Dick, the film is set in the Orwellian near-future of 2054, where a trio of genetically modified pre-cogs warn of murders before they happen. In an SF twist on the classic Hitchcockian wrong-man scenario, Detective John Anderton is the zealous precrime cop who is himself revealed as a future killer. Plot twists & red herrings drive the action forward, & complications abound, not least Andertons crippling emotional state, his drug habit, his avuncular-yet-sinister boss & the ambitious FBI agent Witwer snapping at his heels.
Though the film toys with the notion of free will in a deterministic universe, this is not so much a movie of grand ideas as forward-looking ones. Its depiction of a near-future filled with personalised advertising & intrusive security devices that relentlessly violate the right of anonymity is disturbingly believable. Ultimately, though, its a chase movie & the innovative set-piece sequences reveal Spielbergs flair for staging action. As with A.I. before it, theres a nagging feeling that the all-too-neat resolution is a Spielbergian touch too far: the movie could satisfactorily have ended several minutes earlier. Although this is superior SF from one of Hollywoods greatest craftsmen, it would have been more in the spirit of Philip K Dick to leave a few tantalisingly untidy plot threads dangling. Biography: Max von Sydow [Top] Carl Adolf von Sydow was born on April 10, 1929 to a middle class family in Lund, southern Sweden. His father, Carl Wilhelm, was a professor of comparative folklore at the nearby University of Lund ; his mother, Maria, was a school teacher. He had at least one brother, who died during the filming of von Sydows most controversial film The Exorcist. Little material is available on his childhood, except that he seems to have been a shy, quiet child. He attended the Cathedral School of Lund, but despite being taught English from the age of nine, von Sydow initially professed little interest in working outside Sweden. In their late teens, von Sydow & some friends founded an amateur theatre company & this is where he started his acting career. He completed National Service before going on to study at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm where he trained between 1948 & 1951 with the likes of Lars Ekborg, Margaretha Krook & Ingrid Thulin. During his time at Dramaten, he made his screen debut in Alf Sjoberg s films Only a Mother & Lady Julie, a Swedish classic after August Strindberg.
