Background Information: Mars Attacks
[Top]
Mars Attacks! was originally a science fiction trading card series created by Topps in 1962. The cards told an outrageous story of the invasion of Earth by cruel, hideous Martians. The series developed a cult following & has been reprinted occasionally. Mars Attacks!, a comedy / science fiction film directed by Tim Burton, was a big-budget production masquerading as a B-movie. The film is visually impressive, as are most of Burtons films & is highly dependent upon special effects. The films soundtrack by Danny Elfman makes extensive use of the theremin. The film is highly parodic & contains numerous anachronicstic references to 1950s-style Science Fiction films. First Contact, for the three films were released in the same year, 1996. Mars Attacks! was instead based the trading card series. The exaggerated comic violence of the movie is only slightly more intense & garish than in the original cards. Therefore, as with other Burton movies, the subject under scrutiny is not the present, but the mass culture of suburban childhood of the past. Posters Of Mars Attacks

Its enlightening to view Tim Burtons Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burtons eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in cinemas. The idea of invading aliens ray-gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, & the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed to be spread thin on the big screen. On video, however, the movies kooky humour seems a bit more concentrated. The Earth actors include Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Michael J Fox, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, Tom Jones & Pam Grier.
