Biography: George Raft
[Top]
George Raft was an American film actor most closely identified with his portrayals of gangsters in crime melodramas of the 1930s & 1940s. Born George Ranft in Hells Kitchen, New York City, he quickly adopted the tough guy persona that he would later use in his films. Initially interested in dancing, as a young man he showed great aptitude & this, combined with his elegant fashion sense, allowed him to work as a dancer in some of New York Citys most fashionable nightclubs. He became part of the stage act of Texas Guinan & his success led him to Broadway where he again worked as a dancer. He worked in London as a chorusboy at some time in the early 20s. Oh yes, I knew him. We were in a big show tagether. Sometimes, to eke out our miserable pay, wed do a dance act after the show at a club & wed have to walk back home because all the buses had stopped for the night by that time. Hed tell me how he was going to be a big star one day & once he said that wqhen hed made it how hed make sure to arrange a Hollywood contract for me. I just laughed & said, Come on, Georgie, slop dreaming. Posters Of George Raft

Biography: Sylvia Sidney
[Top]
Sylvia Sidney was an American actress. Born Sophia Kosow in The Bronx, New York, New York, Sidney became an actress at the age of 15 as a way of overcoming shyness. A student of the Theater Guilds School for Acting, Sidney appeared in several of their productions during the 1920s & earned praise from theater critics. In 1927 she was seen by a Hollywood talent scout & made her first film appearance later that year. During the Great Depression Sidney appeared in a string of films, playing either the girlfriend or the sister of a gangster. Among her films of this period were An American Tragedy & Street Scene, Sabotage & Dead End. Her career diminished somewhat during the early 1940s & a comeback later in the decade failed to renew her popularity. In 1952 she played the role of Fantine in Les Miserables & her performance was widely praised & allowed her opportunities to develop as a character actress. She received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams. Posters Of Dead End
