The Crocodile Hunter - Collision Course
Background Information: The Crocodile Hunter [Top] The Crocodile Hunter is a wildlife documentary television series hosted by Australian zookeeper Steve Irwin in the early 2000s that became wildly popular with American audiences, making millions for Irwin, his management & the screening cable television network Animal Planet. The show involves Irwin, a sun-bronzed Queenslander whose accent & vocabulary are reminiscent of the fictional Crocodile Dundee, going to various exotic locations, locating various pieces of dangerous local wildlife, such as the crocodiles of the title, wrestling them to the ground & showing them to the camera before releasing them, apparently unharmed. His antics are often narrated, breathlessly, by his Oregonian wife, Terri Irwin. A sign of the shows notoriety is that it has been parodied on South Park. Whilst popular in the United States, particularly with children, Irwin & the show are the subject of derision in Australia. It is widely believed that Irwins accent, catchphrases & screen persona are a calculated fiction designed to appeal to American stereotypes about Australians. There's also an interactive commentary track providing extra trivia titbits, as well as a fairly pointless photo gallery of still images.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Fans of Steve Irwins television show will already know what to expect from The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course. By the time of this, his first feature film, the Australian nature programme presenter had become a worldwide cult figure, thanks to his natural charm, good-natured wit and, most importantly, what appears to be his utter disregard for his own safety when facing some of the most dangerous wild animals on the planet. Simply put, he does things that are utterly mad, but manages to do so while appearing supremely competent. Steve Irwin is a dude.
The makers of Collision Course obviously knew this, as their attitude towards the film is if it aint broke, dont fix it. Theres a rudimentary plot that involves a renegade crocodile, a lost Top Secret American satellite & some CIA agents on a retrieval mission in the Australian Outback, but these are just a backdrop filled by forgettable characters. The real stars are, quite rightly, Steve Irwin, his wife Terri & their long-suffering dog Sui . The entire film is done in the same format as the TV series, with Steve speaking directly to the camera as he handles everything from the most poisonous snake in the world , a bird-eating spider & overzealous poachers . Plus, of course, an enormous crocodile which he wrestles underwater , grapples on land & lassos from a boat. Best of all, because its Steve Irwin, you know these animals arent props or special effects, that huge snake is real , as is that spider crawling on his wife & that crocodile chewing on his oar. People looking for plot & substance would be better off avoiding The Crocodile Hunter. But fans of the Irwins will find this an entertaining & amusing way to spend a couple of hours. Biography: Steve Irwin [Top] Stephen Robert Steve Irwin is the manager of Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia. He is best known as the co-presenter of a highly unconventional nature documentary series, The Crocodile Hunter, in which Irwins larger-than-life persona & seemingly outrageous antics are the key features. Born in Victoria, he moved with his parents to Queensland as a child. His dads name is Bob. The family ran the Queensland Reptile & Fauna Park, a small reptile park, which Steve became involved in running. When he was older, he became a crocodile trapper, removing crocodiles from near populated areas, performing the service for free with the quid pro quo that he kept them for the park. In 1991, he took over the running of the park, now renamed the Australia Zoo & in 1992 met & married Terri. The footage, shot by John Stainton, of their crocodile-trapping honeymoon became the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter, which became wildly successful in America. Collision Course, was released. In 2003, Irwin was reportedly in line to host a chat show on Australian network television.

While working in the family business in 1986, she started a rehabilitation facility called Cougar Country to re-educate & release predatory mammals such as foxes, possums, raccoons, bears, bobcats & of course cougars back into the wild. Soon she was handling 300 animals each year.
