Background Information: Intimacy
[Top]
Intimacy was published in 1998 by Hanif Kureishi. The novel deals with a middle aged man & his thoughts about leaving his wife & 2 young sons. Set in the modern day london, the story tells why the protagonist wants to leave his family. The timespan of the novel is roughly 24 hours. The novel was loosely adabted to a movie Intimacy in 2001. He has lived with his wife for 6 years & has known her for 10, he is unhappy in his marriage & has had severel affairs. The trigger for him deciding to leave his wife is more or less that his young lover one day says to him. If you want me, Im here. After that he gradually admits to himself that hes not happy with his wife. There is no actual development of the main character & in the end he leaves the family. The writing style is similar to Imre Kertesz s Kaddis a meg nem született gyermekért. That is inner dialog mixed with flashbacks, explaining & contemplating the thoughts of the protagonist. Some of the themes of the book is the following. Old family constructs in a modern society. Sexual desires versus intellectual desires.

Helmed by French auteur Patrice Chéreau, who directed the vastly superior Queen Margot, the British film Intimacy is a limp mess. A man & woman carry on an illicit affair - they meet at his house Wednesday afternoons for sex. They know nothing about each other, not even names. Eventually, the man finds himself wanting to know more about the woman , & he begins following her after their trysts. What he finds out about her throws their relationship into question.

Intimacy gained attention & notoriety for its explicit sex scenes . The sex scenes are among the most graphic ever seen in a mainstream movie, including a rather shocking scene where Fox fellates Rylance . Ultimately, however, the sex scenes are quite un-sexy as the characters are so distant from each other. A movie called Intimacy that lacks any intimacy whatsoever? Sounds like an elaborate joke to me.

Aside from the explicitness of the sex scenes, the movie offers nothing new. The characters are not well-delineated, & the conflicts are ill-defined. On the plus side, Mark Rylance & Kerry Fox give good performances; however, its rather disconcerting seeing such talented actors engaging in graphic sex scenes in a tepid movie. Both actors have impressive backgrounds in the theater, & Rylance has acted extensively in Shakespearian productions at the Globe Theatre. Shaking his spear indeed!

Extras: The DVD includes minimal extras: a photo gallery, brief bios of the actors, & the trailer. A director commentary would be much appreciated, or even a commentary from the actors. Id love to hear what filming the explicit sex scenes was like!
