Extreme Championship Wrestling was a groundbreaking & influential professional wrestling league & was a stop for many popular wrestlers seen today. Best known for its audience participation by its chanting fans, it was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1992 by Tod Gordon, who was its first owner. ECW was founded in 1992, under the name Eastern Championship Wrestling & upon its foundation, it was a member of the National Wrestling Alliance. In 1994, after a tournament was held in the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the vacant NWA World Heavyweight Title, tournament winner Shane Douglas threw down the belt & proclaimed ECW Extreme Championship Wrestling, thus starting the hardcore revolution. With the backing of owner Todd Gordon & booker Paul Heyman, ECW withdrew from the NWA & became an underground sensation. The group would showcase many different styles of professional wrestling, popularizing bloody hardcore wrestling matches & the 3-Way Dance. Wrestlers such as Shane Douglas, Public Enemy & the Tasmaniac helped launch the new ECW at this time.
Biography: Mikey Whipwreck
[Top]
James Watson, better known as Mikey Whipwreck, is an American professional wrestler. Throughout the 1990s he was an Extreme Championship Wrestling mainstay. Previous Identities. Mikey, Mikey Whipwreck, Young Dragon #2. Previous Manager. Lou E Dangerously, The Sinister Minister, Tara Charisma, Mick Foley. Finishing/Signature Move. Whipper-snapper, Super Whipper-snapper, Franken-Mikey. Mikey Whipwreck was trained by Sonny Blaze in 1993. Blaze opted not to charge him, doubting the likelihood of Whipwreck ever succeeding as a wrestler. Once his training was complete, Whipwreck became part of the Extreme Championship Wrestling ring crew, assembling the ring in the ECW Arena. ECW booker Paul Heyman hired him after he watched Whipwreck practise a variety of aerial manoeuvres before the show began. The short, lightly-built Whipwreck made a natural underdog & would absorb a great deal of damage in the course of his matches & his entrance music, Becks Loser, predicated his poor win-loss record.

He gained considerable success in ECW including a record 22 month reign as ECW World Television Champion, before having to vacate the title due to a broken leg. He was the most popular wrestler to ever grace an ECW ring. He stayed with ECW until its demise in 2001. A couple of moths later, he signed with the WWF & was an immediate hit with the fans.
