Biography: Leon Lai

Leon Lai is a cantopop singer & star of several Hong Kong movies. He was born in Beijing & is the only child in his family. His parents divorced when he was four. Lai studied at Kings Way Princeton College. Before he became a singer in Hong Kong, he worked as a salesperson for a cellular phone company. He was the second runner up in the New Talent Singing Contest, held by the TVB in 1986. He signed to Sony Music on March 23, 1998. He was a singer of Polygram before. Together with Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau & Aaron Kwok, Lai is one of the four popular male singers that the media refer to as the Four Great Heavenly Kings. In the early stages of his career, he mainly sang cantopop, but thanks to his producer Mark Lui he expanded his repertoire to include popular electronic songs with compelling music videos. Some of these are regarded as the best in his career. In 2002, he was selected to sing Charged up, the 2002 World Cup theme song for Greater China Region. Maggie Cheung Man-yuk is a Hong Kong film star who cast in more than 80 films since the 1980s. Cheung moved from Hong Kong to England with her family when she was 8 years old. She returned to Hong Kong after finishing secondary school & worked as a model for a clothing store. She won second place in the Miss Hong Kong pageant in 1983 at the age of 19 & was later cast in a number of TV dramas & movies. Her career rocketed after she co-starred in Police Story, as Jackie Chan s girlfriend. She has won numerous Best Actress awards & is best known around the world for her roles in Police Story, Super Cop, Actress, Chinese Box, In the Mood for Love & Hero. She won HKs top actress award in 1990. The success of In the Mood for Love left Cheung & costar Tony Leung as two of Asia s most internationally recognized stars. In December 1998, Cheung married French film maker Olivier Assayas, who directed her in Irma Vep & reduced her work load to two films a year. Peter Chan is a film director & producer. He spent his teens in Bangkok, Thailand & studied in the United States, where he attended film school at UCLA. He returned to Hong Kong in 1983 & started working in the film industry. He served as a second assistant director & producer to John Woo on Heroes Shed No Tears, which was set in Thailand. He also was a location manager on three Jackie Chan films, Wheels on Meals, The Protector & Armour of God. Between Hello & Goodbye, was crowned best film at the Hong Kong Film Directors Guild in 1991. It also won best actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Eric Tsang, who would become a frequent collaborator with Chan. He Aint Heavy, Hes My Father. Other critical & commercial successes followed, including Tom, Dick & Hairy, Hes a Woman, Shes a Man & Comrades, Almost a Love Story. In the late 1990s, Chan worked in Hollywood, directing The Love Letter, which starred Kate Capshaw, Ellen Degeneres & Tom Selleck.
