Background Information: Days Of Heaven
[Top]
Days of Heaven is a 1978 film written & directed by Terrence Malick & starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard & Linda Manz. The story concerns Bill, a Chicago laborer who flees to the Texas panhandle with his girlfriend & sister to escape a murder charge. The three hire on as seasonal workers with a farmer & a complicated relationship ensues among the four. The story has numerous allusions to the Old Testament. The film won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Per Academy custom, was the award was given in the name of principal photographer Nestor Almendros. This was somewhat controversial, as renowned cinematographer Haskell Wexler also received credit on the film. Wexler has complained about not receiving an Oscar statue for his contributions to the work.

Originally shown on the big screen in glorious 70 mm, Terrence Malicks Days of Heaven is an aesthetically flawless eye-catching period piece that won its cinematographer, Néstor Almendros, an Oscar. Texture & colour are the unbilled characters in this tragic tale, & are just as important as the players. Richard Gere works in a Chicago steel mill at the turn of the 19th century, but must flee the city after accidentally killing a man. Heading for the wheat fields of Texas, he packs up his girlfriend & his younger sister . Instead of a better life, they head straight into tragedy when a wealthy farmer falls for Adams. Believing him to be dying & expecting to inherit a fortune, she agrees to marry him. Their plans change when Shepard fails to die & Gere takes matters into his own hands. The story, sadly, fades somewhat when compared to the glory of the visuals.

Biography: Terrence Malick
[Top]
Terrence Malick is an enigmatic American film director, screenwriter & film producer. Badlands, Days of Heaven & The Thin Red Line. Badlands & Days of Heaven are considered masterpieces of the Hollywood Renaissance. Malicks work is often characterized by naturalist cinematography & a meditative directorial & editing style. Malick grew up in Oklahoma & Texas before studying philosophy at Harvard University. After graduating he went to Magdalen College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He moved back to the United States & taught philosophy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology while freelancing as a journalist. He got his start in film after being accepted at the American Film Institute in 1969. In addition to his talent, Malicks elusiveness & paucity of output has made him a living legend. After directing his first two features he disappeared from view for 20 years & he has only directed three features in his entire career. Even now, his contracts stipulate that no current pictures of him are to be published & that he is not obligated to do any personal promotion for his films. Posters Of The Thin Red Line
