Background Information: Ali G
[Top]
Ali G is a satirical character invented by the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Ali G first appeared on Channel 4 s The Eleven OClock Show as the voice of youth. He interviewed British public figures, who, too scared to appear uncool, were completely wrong-footed by his idiosyncratic interviewing technique, based mostly on the simple stratagem of pretending to be stupid. He is a member of the West Staines Massiv & lives at 37 Cherry Blossom Close in the heart of the Staines Ghetto. He was educated at what he calls Da Matthew Arnold Skool.   Staines is a middle-class suburb of London that has been the butt of jokes for many years. Anywhere further from an American inner-city ghetto would be hard to imagine. This fact is lost on Ali G, who believes himself to exemplify Gangsta culture. Ali G has subsequently become a UK media phenomenon, with his own TV show. He was featured in Madonna s music video for her song Music as a limousine driver & subsequently recorded his own record with the rap / reggae performer Shaggy.

By the marginal-or-miss standards of British TV spin-offs, Ali G in da House is well above adequate, even though it drags out every smart line or decent routine until they lie dead on the screen just begging for a laugh track. The film pulls back a bit from the absolute obnoxiousness of the Ali G TV skits, which makes Sacha Baron Cohens character bearable at feature length, but also significantly less funny. Here it is finally confirmed that Ali is a weedy white kid called Alistair who pretends to be Jamaican, rather than a weedy white comedian doing a Jamaican character.

Believe it or not, theres actually a plot, with a scheming Chancellor of the Exchequer recruiting Ali as a parliamentary candidate for Staines in a devious attempt to unseat Prime Minister Michael Gambon. Yet this framework is really an excuse for the sketch-like bits, such as a Los Angeles ghetto movie fantasy, Ali G addressing a meeting of lesbian feminists , & Charles Dance forced to read a budget speech in Ali G speak. Oddly, the film makes early-1990s jokes about Tories rather than going after New Labour, but any political satire here comes in second to knob-polishing jokes & sometimes-hilarious patter. Luckless inhabitants of the M4 corridor will nod ruefully at the final gag, in which Ali G persuades the PM not to devastate Staines & nods agreement as Gambon reassures him, its all right, well destroy Slough instead.

Biography: Michael Gambon

Sir Michael Gambon is one of Britain s foremost actors, knighted for his services to the theatre - despite having been born in Dublin, Ireland. In his youth, Gambon played romantic leads, notably in the early 1970s BBC television series, The Borderers, in which he was swashbuckling Gavin Ker. However, his craggy looks soon made him into a character actor & it was not until Dennis Potter s The Singing Detective that he became a household name. Even after this success, for which he won a BAFTA award, his career was patchy, with big hits such as the 1989 film, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover interspersed with less notable work. In recent years, films such as Dancing at Lughnasa & Plunkett & Macleane, as well as television appearances in series such as Wives & Daughters, a made for TV adaption of Beckett s Endgame & Perfect Strangers, have made him one of Britains most sought-after actors, as well as revealing his talent for comedy. He was last seen as the successor of Richard Harris playing Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban. Posters Of The Singing Detective
