Editorial DVD Review

This 1997 thriller For Hire ponders the question of what terrible things a person might be persuaded to do, given the right circumstances & the right price. Rob Lowe plays Mitch, a Chicago cab driver trying to make it as an actor, married to the pregnant Faye. Among his clients are bestselling writer Lou Weber , who befriends Mitch & confides in him that a drug dealer is trying to kill him. Over the next few days, Mitch begins to suffer severe stomach pains, collapsing in Webers apartment after a fare & is diagnosed with inoperable stomach cancer. With only a short time to live, he decides to take up Webers offer to rub out his drug dealer stalker for $50,000, a nest egg for his family after hes gone.

A not entirely unpredictable twist follows, hinted at by the Lucifer-like beard sported by Mantegna & the film alights only briefly to meditate on the potential for evil in all of us before resuming its journey along conventional, though certainly passable Hollywood thriller lines. An intriguing precept, its just a slight shame that neither the players nor directors hearts seem really to be in this movie.

Biography: Rob Lowe
[Top]
Rob Lowe is an American actor who was a member of the Brat Pack. Rob Lowe became famous after appearing in a string of popular movies that included other members of the brat pack, the most notable being St. Elmos Fire. In 1988, Lowe gained notoriety after he was caught on tape engaging in sexual activities with two women, one of whom was underage. After a brief flurry of media attention, Lowe was sentenced to twenty hours of community service & the scandal soon subsided. He is perhaps best known for playing Sam Seaborn in the television show The West Wing, a role which was his from 1999 - 2003. When the show premiered, Lowes character was to be much more important. But the extremely talented cast soon made the show into the hottest ensemble cast on TV & Sam Seaborn became possibly the character with the least screen time. Lowe left the show in a highly publicized exit during the fourth season. His exit was quickly followed by that of series creator & writer Aaron Sorkin & director Tommy Schlamme - a move which saw the shows style change greatly, to mixed reactions from fans.
