Background Information: Teletubbies
[Top]
Teletubbies is a BBC childrens television series aimed particularly at babies & pre-school toddlers, produced between 1997-2001 by Ragdoll Productions. It was created by Anne Wood CBE, Ragdolls creative director & Andrew Davenport, who wrote each of the shows 365 episodes. The programme was a rapid critical & commercial success in Britain & abroad, particularly notable for its high production values; it won a BAFTA in 1998. Although the show is aimed at children between the ages of one to four, the show was a substantial cult hit with older generations, particularly college students ; the mixture of bright colours, unusual designs, repetitive non-verbal dialogue, the ritualistic format & the occasional forays into physical comedy appealed to a demographic who perceived the show as having psychedelic connotations. Teletubbies was controversial for this reason & also for a perception that it was insufficiently educational. Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa & Po, who live within a futuristic dome, which is set in a landscape of rolling grasslands.

Teletubbies & the Snow
One day, sparkly clouds appear over Tellytubby land. Soon, everything is covered in fluffy, white snow, including the Tubbies favourite things, their ball, bag, hat & scooter. The chubby foursome are at first afraid, but soon get stuck into some serious snow games, including rolling snowballs, sliding down hillsides, making footprints & making a snow Tellytubby, even their goggle-eyed vacuum-cleaner, Noo-noo, gets covered from brush to wheels in it. Teletubbies & the Snow will particularly delight pre-schoolers just getting their first taste of a real winter, but children who have never seen snow will love the four short films of real-life children singing winter songs & celebrating the year-end, as well as the antics of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-laa & Po, giggly Sun Baby & a cast of hundreds of fluffy bunnies hopping around. , Alison Jardine

Happy Christmas From The Teletubbies
What better time than Christmas could there be for these four likeable, er, things? After all, like the children they really are, the Teletubbies find the whole procedure to be an endless source of wonderful surprises & exciting things to do. They get presents, of course, found with the tree which, in Teletubby Land, just mysteriously appears, exactly as it does to real children, of course . Theres also some jolly footage of real children, including a suitably happy bunch choosing & decorating a real tree, & of course its these sections of outside broadcasting which balance the caperings of the four plush poppets so well. Despite the festive theme, this neednt be a Christmas-only video; the whole world is wondrous for the Teletubbies pre-school audience, so the occasion is perfectly presented as a part of that, no more & no less.
