The Man Who Sued God
Background Information: The Man Who Sued God [Top]
Editorial DVD Review [Top] The Man Who Sued God defies simple definition, managing to be several types of movie all at the same time. As a theological-romantic-comedy-drama, its in a somewhat unique category all of its own. Perhaps only Billy Connolly could carry off a central role that combines slapstick with raging anger, puppy-dog disappointment & strong language delivered in his distinctive accent. These facets of performance are used & abused in a tale that feels like it really ought to be based on a true story, but isnt.
Connollys life as a fisherman is sunk by the destruction of his boat by a bolt of lightning. The insurance company wont pay up because it falls under that age-old excuse of being an Act of God. So Connolly decides to sue the deity. The premise raises issues about how the law & the church have apparently conspired together. But at heart the film is a simple character study, so any pondering on legal or theological implications will have to be done on your own time; the screen is occupied with family issues, underhand dealings & a maybe-maybe romance with Judy Davis. Big Yin fans at least will enjoy the Connollys composite character. Biography: Billy Connolly [Top] William Billy Connolly, is a comedian, musician & actor. Billy Connolly was born in Glasgow, Scotland to Mary & William Connolly, the son of an Irish immigrant. Connolly was brought up in the Anderston & later, Partick districts of Glasgow & attended Saint Gerards Secondary School. He started his working life as a welder in a Glasgow shipyard but left that trade to become a folk singer. Together with Tam Harvey he started a group called the Humblebums, which later included Gerry Rafferty. Connolly sang, played banjo & guitar & entertained the audience with his humorous introductions to the songs. Eventually the duo broke up & Billy went solo. His first solo album in 1972, Billy Connolly Live! on Transatlantic Records, features Billy as a singer, songwriter & musician. His early albums were a mixture of comedy performances with musical interludes, but by the late 1980s Connolly had all but dropped the music from his act, though he still records the occasional musical performance. It is as a comedian that Connolly is best known. His observational humour is idiosyncratic.
