Calendar Girls is a British film of 2003, based on the true story of a group of Yorkshire women who produce a nude calendar to raise money for charity, under the auspices of the Womens Institute. The film stars Helen Mirren & Julie Walters. It also features John Alderton, Annette Crosbie, Ciaran Hinds, Celia Imrie & Penelope Wilton. Calendar Girls was inspired by the story of a similar real life nude calendar produced by the members of the Rylstone Womens Institute in Yorkshire, England. The film is a feel-good comedy based on the emphatically amateur status of the eponymous Calendar Girls, in humourous contrast to the professional models who appear in most calendars & pinups. Dame Helen Mirren is a British stage, television & movie actress. She is particularly well-known for her role as female detective Jane Tennison in the Prime Suspect series of television dramas. Mirren was born in the UK to a Russian - noble father who emigrated there in response to the Russian Revolution. She first appeared on stage in 1965 as Cleopatra for the National Youth Theatre. This led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Cressida in Troilus & Cressida & Lady Macbeth in the production by Trevor Nunn. In 1972 she joined Peter Brook s International Centre for Theatre Research & joined the groups tour across North Africa which created The Conference of the Birds The sexy image she acquired in her youth has been little affected by encroaching age. Julie Walters is a British actress, mainly associated with comedy & character roles. She ranked first in a poll to find Britains most popular actress. Born in Smethwick, England, Walters first became known as the occasional partner of comedienne Victoria Wood. Their series, Wood & Walters, appeared on television in 1982 & they have continued to perform together frequently over the years. One of Julie Walters best-known roles is as Mrs Overall in Woods spoof soap opera, Acorn Antiques. Her first serious acting role on TV was in the classic Boys from the Blackstuff in 1980 & she broke into films with her sensational Academy Award nominated & BAFTA Best Actress award winning performance opposite Michael Caine in Educating Rita, a role she had created on the West End stage. Julie Walters has won numerous acting awards & was made an OBE in 1999 for her services to the theatre. In 2001, she won a Laurence Olivier award for her performance in Arthur Miller s All My Sons.
