Calendar Girls
Background Information: Calendar Girls [Top] Calendar Girls is a British film of 2003, based on the true story of a group of Yorkshire women who produce a nude calendar to raise money for charity, under the auspices of the Womens Institute. The film stars Helen Mirren & Julie Walters. It also features John Alderton, Annette Crosbie, Ciaran Hinds, Celia Imrie & Penelope Wilton. Calendar Girls was inspired by the story of a similar real life nude calendar produced by the members of the Rylstone Womens Institute in Yorkshire, England. The film is a feel-good comedy based on the emphatically amateur status of the eponymous Calendar Girls, in humourous contrast to the professional models who appear in most calendars & pinups. They dropped everything for a good cause. Posters Of Calendar GirlsEditorial DVD Review [Top] In the sensible yet elegant hands of actresses Helen Mirren & Julie Walters, Calendar Girls walks a fine line between sappiness & snickering & ends up both wonderfully funny & gently touching. When her best friend Annie loses her husband, Chris cooks up a scheme to commemorate him: they & their friends, all fiftysomething women, will make a nude calendar to raise money for the hospital where he died. The calendar becomes hugely popular, but the success may drive a wedge between the two womens friendship. Based on a true story, Calendar Girls carefully balances the stories of several women as it follows the calendars media explosion, becoming a surprisingly moving fable of loss, determination & the perils of fame. And lets face it, Helen Mirren is one of the wittiest & sexiest women alive, clothes on or not.
