Background Information: Evolution
[Top]
Evolution is a 2001 comedy sci-fi movie directed by Ivan Reitman. It is based on a story by Don Jackoby who converted it into a screenplay along with David Diamond & David Weissman. Ira Kane & Harry Block discover an alien organism in an asteroid that has crashed to Earth. Though initially a simple goo it rapidly evolves into a variety of creatures that threaten to take over the sleepy town of Glen Canyon. Soon the army, lead by someone very familiar with Ira Kane, attends the scene & attempt to control the situation. Unfortunately, all they do is make it worse & it comes down to Kane, Block & a few friends to save everyone. It is discovered that selenium, an ingredient in some Head & Shoulders shampoos, is as poisonous to the alien life-forms as arsenic is to humans. This idea is brought about by performing the same translation of movements in the periodic table from nitrogen to selenium as from carbon to arsenic. Have a nice end of the world. Ted Levine – Brig. Gen. Russell Woodman. Evolution   at the Internet Movie Database.

DVD Extras: Evolution's special effects & CGI are seamless & crystal clear in anamorphic widescreen with some of the creatures looking more realistic than the actors. This is a movie with quite a few set pieces, but none show off the Dolby 5.1 soundtrack better than the dragon attack in the mall, connect up a couple of speakers & you can hear the flap of leathery wings behind your couch. In terms of extras there's a making-of documentary from HBO called The Evolution of Evolution, hosted by Orlando Jones, in which he interviews his co-stars & the director Ivan Reitman. You also get the behind-scenes track on the special effects & art direction. Other than that you get the theatrical trailer, the teaser trailer & the original trailer for Ghostbusters, which adds a touch classic 80s' memorabilia.
Editorial DVD Review

Based on the evidence in Evolution, one thing is perfectly clear: special effects have evolved, but director Ivan Reitman has reverted to primitive pandering. Equally obvious is the fact that Evolution is a defacto rip-off of Reitmans 1984 classic Ghostbusters, but this time theres no Bill Murray to deliver the best punch lines & the comedy has devolved into a gross-fest including deep-rectal extraction of alien insects, fire-hose enemas into a giant alien sphincter, & a full-moon display of David Duchovnys naked posterior. Whereas Ghostbusters was a shrewd, irreverent mainstream comedy that combined gooey spectral ectoplasm with something resembling genuine wit, Evolution is a crude, juvenile romp in which all things slimy are elevated to comedic supremacy. Granted, thats not always a bad thing. As latter-day Ghostbusters equivalents, Duchovny, Orlando Jones & Seann William Scott make a fine comedic trio, & Julianne Moore is equally amusing as a clumsy scientist & Duchovnys obligatory love interest. Despite the meddling of clueless military buffoons, they join forces to eradicate a wild variety of rapidly evolving alien creatures that arrived on Earth via meteor impact, & the extraterrestrial beasties are outrageously designed & marvellously convincing. For anyone who prefers lowbrow humour, Evolution will prove as entertaining as Ghostbusters , while others may lament Reitmans shameless embrace of crudeness. One things for certain: after seeing this film, youll gain a whole new appreciation for Head & Shoulders shampoo.
