Doctor Dolittle 2
Background Information: Doctor Dolittle 2 [Top]
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Its only a marginal improvement, but Dr Dolittle 2 defies the odds by rising above its popular 1998 predecessor . Eddie Murphy plays the title role with ease & with the confident professionalism of a comedian who knows when to share the spotlight, especially when hes being upstaged by a bunch of animals who steal all the punch lines. And once again the film is aimed at a pre-teen audience: so many of those punch lines involve flatulence, bodily functions & frequent use of the word butt.
The difference this time is that Dr Dolittle has settled into his talk-to-the-animals routine; his 16-year-old daughter is getting to be a feisty handful ; & his lawyer wife is representing him in a trial against corporate villains who want to clear-cut a local forest. Naturally, the local critter mafia want Dolittle to fight for their cause, & this involves the successful mating of an endangered bear & a domesticated circus bear whos forgotten all the bear necessities of life in the wild. The bears are voiced by Lisa Kudrow & Steve Zahn & they almost steal the show, but the whole menagerie is equally amusing. Adults might wish that the filmmakers had tried harder to make a truly memorable sequel, but this is a movie for kids, & theyre going to love it without quibbling. Biography: Eddie Murphy [Top] Eddie Murphy is an African-American comedian & actor. Murphy began his comedy career at the young age of 19, as a performer on NBC s Saturday Night Live television show. His characters include a parody of Buckwheat from the Little Rascals & of Fred Rogers. Murphy later starred in many comedies including the Beverly Hills Cop series, Trading Places & Coming to America. He is a versatile voice actor & voiced the donkey in the Shrek series & the dragon in Disney s Mulan. In many of his films, he plays multiple roles in addition to his main character. A perfect example of this is The Nutty Professor, a remake of the Jerry Lewis classic in which Murphy plays several members of the Klump family as well as Sherman Klumps arrogant alter ego, Buddy Love. His early comedy was racy, akin to Richard Pryor, whom Murphy says was the one that wanted to get into comedy. Characterized by excessive swearing & making fun of gays, singers & others, Murphy became, in a sense, the Pryor of the 1980s.
