Editorial DVD Review [Top] The Revenge of Frankenstein was an inevitability after Hammer Films had made an international star of Peter Cushing in The Curse of this sequel-rich franchise. The plot here is a braver twist on the story than the many follow-ups would take. The Creature doesnt make its presence known until the final reel, up to which point the only sense of lurking menace comes from Cushings deliciously mannered performance as a disguised Dr Stein. A new name & a new town is a gamble sure to fail, & circumstances almost immediately conspire against the deceit. Also rattling around the brilliantly lit studio sets are Eunice Gayson & Francis Matthews, while Michael Gwynn gives everything hes got in stiff competition to predecessor Christopher Lee in the Creature role. Its subtle & simply screams out for enfranchisement, so of course Hammer dutifully made another five in the series.

Biography: Peter Cushing [Top] Peter Cushing was a British actor, perhaps best known today for his role as Grand Moff Tarkin in the film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Cushing is also remembered for his work in the Hammer Horror films — particularly his recurring roles as Dr Frankenstein in Hammers Frankenstein films & as Professor van Helsing in Hammers Dracula films. His first major role & probably the most significant on television in his entire career, was starring as Winston Smith in BBC Television s 1954 adaptation of George Orwell s famous novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Cushing drew much praise for his performance in this production, although he always felt that his performance in the existing version of the play – it was performed twice in one week & only the second version survives in the archives – was inferior to the first. In the mid- 1960s, he played the eccentric human scientist Dr Who in two movies based on the television series Doctor Who.
