Posters Of Notting HillEditorial DVD Review [Top] They dont really make many romantic comedies like Notting Hill anymore, blissfully romantic, sincerely sweet, & not grounded in any reality whatsoever. Pure fairy tale, & with a huge debt to Roman Holiday, Notting Hill ponders what would happen if a beautiful, world-famous person were to suddenly drop into your life unannounced & promptly fall in love with you. Thats the crux of the situation for William Thacker , who owns a travel bookshop in Londons fashionable Notting Hill district. Hopelessly ordinary , William is going about his life when renowned movie star Anna Scott walks into his bookstore & into his heart. After another contrived meeting involving spilled orange juice, William & Anna share a spontaneous kiss , & soon both are smitten. The question is, of course, can William & Anna reconcile his decidedly commonplace bookseller existence & her lifestyle as a jet-setting, paparazzi-stalked celebrity? Smartly scripted by Richard Curtis & directed by Roger Michell , Notting Hill is hardly realistic, but as wish fulfilment & a romantic comedy, its irresistible. True, Roberts doesnt really have to stretch very far to play a big-time actress who makes $15 million per movie, but shes more winning & relaxed than shes been in years, & Grant is sweetly understated as a man blindsided by love. Together, in moments of quiet, theyre a charming couple, & you can feel her craving for real love & his awe & amazement at the wonderful person for whom he has fallen. The only blight on the film is its overbearing pop soundtrack, though Elvis Costellos heart-wrenching version of She gets poignant exposure. With Rhys Ifans as Grants scene-stealing, slovenly housemate & Alec Baldwin in a sly, perfectly cast cameo.
Biography: Hugh Grant [Top] Hugh Grant is an English actor. He was born Hugh John Mungo Grant in London, England & tends to play the archetypal Englishman & is of Scottish ancestry. After attending Latymer Upper School for boys, Grant studied English at New College, Oxford. He made his film debut in 1982 with Oxford-financed Privileged. Television came later, in 1985. One of his first major film roles was in The Remains of the Day & he became simultaneously known as the partner of actress Elizabeth Hurley, but it was Four Weddings & a Funeral which turned him into a major star. Not long after gaining the starring role in Sense & Sensibility in 1995, Grant was arrested near Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, having been caught having oral_sex with an Afro-American prostitute in a car. A public apology helped win back public support, but the break-up with Hurley came soon afterwards -- though they later got back together for a short time.
