A Man Apart is a 2003 action film starring Vin Diesel & directed by F Gary Gray. Sean Vetter & Demetrius Hicks, thugs-turned-cops, members of the DEA working on the California / Mexico border. After busting a big player named Memo Lucero, the mysterious Diablo steps into his place & organize the assassination of Vetters wife, Stacy. Looking for revenge, Vetter starts to act outside the law to punish his wifes murderers. To accomplish that, he asks Memo, whos now in prison, for help to find Diablo. With Hicks help, he hunts every drug player from bottom to the top of the cartel s hierarchy. A lawsuit was filed by Blizzard Entertainment, a computer game company, creator of the Diablo computer game series, arguing they had trademarked the title Diablo & intended to make a movie based on their game. Initialy the ruling was favorable to Blizzard, but overturned later. In Brazil, it was advertised as O Justiceiro, which is the same name the Marvel Comics The Punisher character is published there. In this film Vin Diesel shows that he has acting skills galore! His range of emotions & his facial expressions are really impressive! He is constantly improving.....and the only thing I think he should work on now is his voice. He should use even more tonalities, painting shades of emotion & expressions that go directly to our ears & into our hearts.......then he would definitely be second to none! In this film he is also supported by an excellent Larenz Tate & other actors who help to move the action-filled story along quite nicely.

Although Diesel gave us some outstanding moments as far as his acting abilities are concerned the film was hobbled by a seriously confusing plot directed by F. Gary Gray! It is obvious that Diesel did the best he could with the what the Gray gave him! Too bad that it appears that something happened in the editing room & some scenes & information that would have helped us viewers to understand things better got left on the cutting room floor!

For instance: why would Diablo destroy his own cocaine empire or blow up his own wife & son? Who or what is Vin Diesel smiling at when he leaves the scene at the end of the film where the drug lord is being arrested again? Is that supposed to be a smile or a nod to his dead wife or a sign of satisfication that he finally got his man!?...perhaps both?!

Maybe it is just me but it also seems to me that some of the action scenes were confusing....in one scene in particular it was not clear who were the bad guys & who were working with or for Vin Diesel! If the director edited it that way to create suspense well the only thing he created was more confusion!

Anyway I liked this film well enough to buy it to add to my Vin Diesel collection! But ONLY because Vin Diesel is in it & does a fantastic job with his character! Good thing that this Gray cloud has a silver lining: Vin Diesel!

Mark Vincent, better known by his stage name of Vin Diesel, is an American actor. Diesel is multi-racial, a fact upon which he based his well-recieved 1994 short film Multi-Facial, about a struggling actor who is rejected for part after part because he doesnt look black/white/Jewish enough. Hes quoted as saying his mother is descended from the Sinclairs of Scotland. Also, he has a dog, a mastiff. Diesel, who was cast in 1998 s Saving Private Ryan on the strength of Multi-Facial, broke through to mainstream audiences with the 2001 film The Fast & the Furious & the 2002 film xXx. In 2004 he reprised his role as Pitch Black s Riddick in The Chronicles of Riddick & will thereafter take on the titular role in Hannibal, as the Carthaginian general who crossed the Alps by elephant to attack Rome. Diesel has his own film production company, One Race Productions, with long time producing partner George Zakk.
