Background Information: Teenagers From Outer Space
[Top]
Teenagers from Outer Space is a 1959 science-fiction B-movie about an extraterrestrial ship landing on Earth to use it as a farm for its food supply. The crew of the ship includes several teenagers, two of whom oppose each other in their activities. One becomes enthralled with Earth culture & tries to blend in; the other becomes hostile & attempts to extract his companion, using his disintegrator raygun to kill numerous people in the process. The film was lampooned in June 1992 as an episode of movie-mocking television series Mystery Science Theater 3000. The film was titled The Gargan Terror for its release in the United Kingdom. Perhaps the most notable thing about Teenagers from Outer Space is that it was almost solely the work of one man, Tom Graeff, who, in addition to playing the role of reporter Joe Rogers, wrote, directed, edited & produced the film, on which he also provided cinematography, special effects & music coordination. Outer space teenager Derek has a few characters flaws; he has a respect for other beings, he wants to know who his parentage is, & he reads forbidden books. Thor has none of these hang-ups & a propensity to use earth creatures such as swimming beauty Alice Woodward & little dogs for target practice. The rest of the crew are ambivalent & just want to test the earth as a possible place to grow giant lobsters.Looks like Derek escapes before they can tell him he is the son of He takes a room in the house of the beautiful Betty Morgan & her gullible & excepting Grandpa Morgan . Grandpa is so dumb you keep wishing he was the first victim. The film is well played out & the script sophisticated for the genra. The props were really cheap, including using the same skeleton for all the disintegrated victims. You can see where the plastic ray-gun was stamped together & the authorities used Luger Parabellums to shoot metal pellets. The dialog deplorable & the lobster too recognizable.
