Background Information: Titan Ae [Top] Titan A,E. is a 2000 animated sci-fi space adventure movie from Fox Animation Studios & Twentieth Century Fox. The title refers to the fictional Titan spacecraft that is central to the plot, with A,E. meaning After Earth. The films animation technique combines traditional hand-drawn animation & extensive use of computer generated imagery. The film is in color, running 94 minutes in length & is rated PG for action violence, mild sensuality & brief language. Its working title was Planet Ice. Titan A,E. was not financially successful; after it made only $9,376,845 during its opening weekend, Fox Animation Studios was shut down. A video game in the works for Playstation was cancelled in order to save money. The Spirits Within & Treasure Planet as an example of an animated science-fiction/fantasy movie that failed to attract an audience. In the year 3028 A,D. Earth is under attack by the Drej, aliens made of pure energy. The Drej mothership destroys Earth with an energy beam just as hundreds of escape vehicles manage to escape with the last of humankind aboard.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] A visual knockout, Titan A.E. is an ambitious animated feature that combines traditional animation, computer-generated imagery & special effects in the service of a science fiction adventure plotted with narrative conventions familiar from Star Wars & Star Trek. Credit directors Don Bluth & Gary Goldman with crafting a vivid, convincing look to this deep space saga, which conjures some stunning images: a tense opening sequence climaxing in the destruction of Earth; a watery planet where delicate but deadly hydrogen trees float; joyriding in a starship while pursued by playful space angels; & a nerve-wracking journey through a lethal maze of massive ice crystals each qualify as mesmerising sequences in any film context.
Whats visually stunning proves intermittently stunted on the narrative front, however. Orphaned when the evil Drej atomise Earth, protagonist Cale must journey across space to unlock the mystery of his late fathers final project, the Titan spacecraft, in a test of faith & filial identity that echoes Star Wars. The Titan itself ultimately poses a cosmic potential familiar to admirers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Comical sidekicks , a sultry love interest & a roguish mentor all verge on the generic, narrowly redeemed by dialogue from a writing team including Buffy the Vampire Slayer-creator Joss Whedon. Its likely that Titans target audience of young males prompted the filmmakers to walk a tightrope between softer family features & more violent, hard-edged anime. Although its brief bloodshed & coy nudity stops short of more adult terrain, younger viewers might be unsettled by the violence. Young teens will find the proceedings tamer than the video games & anime fantasies that have influenced it. Biography: Bill Pullman [Top] Bill Pullman is an American actor.
