Background Information: Beat The Devil
[Top]
Beat the Devil John Huston directed & with Truman Capote co-authored this film as a tongue-in-cheek spoof of his earlier masterpiece, The Maltese Falcon & of films of its genre. The script, which was written on a day-to-day basis as the film as being shot concerns the adventures of the passengers of an ill-fated tramp steamer en route to East Africa. The stellar cast of Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley, Peter Lorre & Bernard Lee, This Huston opus does not easily fit into the standard set of film categories; it has variously been classified as a thriller, a comedy, a drama, a crime & a romance movie. It is above all else a parody of the Film Noir style that Huston himself had pioneered & as such has developed cult status in the ensuing years. The movie was not critical received & was to mark the closure of the quest movies period in Huston’s career. Star Humphrey Bogart never liked the movie, perhaps because he lost a good deal of his own money bankrolling it.
Biography: Humphrey Bogart
[Top]
Humphrey Bogart was an iconic American actor who retains legendary status decades after his death. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Bogart the Greatest Male Star of All Time. Bogart typically played smart, playful, courageous, tough, occasionally reckless characters, living in a corrupt world, yet anchored by a hidden moral code. He was also able to play characters with flaws & weaknesses that led to their destruction. His most notable movies include Angels With Dirty Faces, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, To Have & Have Not, The Big Sleep, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Key Largo, In a Lonely Place, The African Queen & The Caine Mutiny. In all, he appeared in 75 feature motion pictures. Outside of America Bogart is seen as a cult figure. French actors such as Jean-Paul Belmondo were deeply influenced by his work & image. In À bout de souffle, perhaps the best-known work of French director Jean-Luc Godard, the protagonist Michel worships the persona of Humphrey Bogart & mimes some of Bogart’s best-known gestures in a way that is both absurd & touching.
