Background Information: The Shipping News
[Top]
The Shipping News is a Pulitzer Prize -winning novel by E Annie Proulx which was published in 1993 & a film of the same name, released in 2001, set on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The film was directed by Lasse Hallstrom & stars Kevin Spacey as the protagonist Quoyle, Judi Dench as his aunt & Julianne Moore. It also stars Pete Postlethwaite, Scott Glenn, Rhys Ifans & Cate Blanchett. The film makes a multitude of small changes from the book, many of which appeared to be intended to save money -- for instance, in the novel, Quoyle had two small daughters, but only one in the film. Quoyle learning that love could be comfortable rather than painful; Quoyle growing from being a bumbling incompetent to being a competent manager; Bunny learning about death.

E Annie Proulxs quirky bestseller The Shipping News gets the Lasse Hallstrom treatment, but the results dont match Chocolat or The Cider House Rules. Lifelong loser Quoyle suffers in a terrible wig, abused by his bitter Dad, snoozing through dead-end jobs, overwhelmed by a mad Cate Blanchett. On the same day, his parents commit suicide & runaway Petal drowns in a car crash. With ominous Aunt Agnis & angelic daughter Bunny, Quoyle relocates to Quoyle Point, moving into a dilapidated family house tethered on a storm-wracked cliff. He takes a job as a reporter, fitting into a feud between owner & editor & begins a tenuous romance with widow Wavey . Happiness threatens, but the weight of an awful past bears down, along with premonitions of doom, decapitation murders & a lot of bad weather...until a cathartic storm sorts it all out. Spare Spacey, miscast as the novels obese hero, underplays to the point of invisibility. As a Gothic soap, it has a few laughs; but its hard to take seriously.
