Background Information: Steps
[Top]
Steps were a British pop group who achieved a series of hit singles during the late nineties & into the millennium. Their name was based around a simple marketing gimmick. Each of their music videos were carefully choreographed & the dance steps were included with each of their single releases. The group, comprised of Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian Watkins, Lee Latchford Evans & Lisa Scott-Lee, formed on May 7, 1996. They were seen performing by producer Pete Waterman & signed to a recording contract on his EBUL label. Watermans stated intention was to try to recreate the sound of ABBA & blend it with a more modern style, however their first single 5,6,7,8 was a techno line dance & though not typical of what would become their style, it became their first hit. The hit singles continued, with their cover version of Bananarama s Last Thing On My Mind & the most ABBA flavoured of their singles, One For Sorrow, reaching the UK Top 10. Their next single, a cover version of the Bee Gees Tragedy became their first number one single in 1998.

Gold is a two-CD compilation of classic singles & album tracks by British singer/songwriter Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam. It is part of Universal Music s series of double-disc anthologies derived from their extensive back catalog. The track list starts with Stevens early British hit Matthew & Son & ends with a new recording by Stevens under his present name of Yusuf Islam, Indian Ocean, recorded & first released as a digital download on the iTunes Music Store to benefit tsunami relief efforts. One review of the complilation suggests that the anthology manages to cram into two discs what 2001s On the Road to Find Out box set tried to accomplish over four.. Like the box set five years earlier, Islam actively participated in the compilation of the anthology. Given both the extensive track listing & the presence of a new Stevens recording, this compilation apparently makes previous non-box set compilations of Stevens work redundant & incomplete.

Greatest Hits is the name of a compilation album of Ace of Base, a pop music group based in Sweden. It was released in 2000 in the United States, while Singles of the 90s, an album containing new material, was released in Europe, Africa & Asia. Unfortunately, the Greatest Hits album was an inferior product, containing no original songs but including several track errors. Even the album cover was poorly printed, with the band members faces difficult to make out. it was the first US Ace of Base album to fail to even enter the US Hot 200 Album list. DVD Extras: This DVD is truly excellent value--literally bursting with extras, from a greatest-hits video medley, through to the single/album-cover interactive library. One member of the band concisely introduces each video, & there is an audio commentary by the group on selected videos & bonus material includes the group performing Too Busy Thinking About My Baby on ITV's Motown Mania. The CD-ROM option allows even more extras, such as additional footage & web-links. The disc also contains the software PC Friendly DVD making it even easier & fun to play the DVD on your home computer. However this collection has an annoying aspect; the numerous menus you need to pass through to access each of the videos individually. There are also no interactive options to guide you through the legendary dance moves
Editorial DVD Review

It is regularly suggested that Steps are one of the hardest-working groups in pop & the Gold DVD provides further evidence that such an assertion is almost certainly true. Since crashing into the Top 20 towards the end of 1997 with the line-dancing inspired 5,6,7,8 the group have been constantly churning out top-notch tunes. Their videos have been as equally colourful, energetic & fun . With their carefully choreographed dance moves, flashy locations & outrageous hairstyles & outfits, the videos have always been a top priority for the group. This collection ranges from the video for their more recent cover of Chain Reaction deceptively filmed in one continuous take, to the beach fun of 5,6,7,8 & are excellently matched to the style of each song. Admittedly some of the videos are rather cheesy, such as Say Youll Be Mine, which is a pastiche of the group re-enacting scenes from recent Hollywood blockbusters, & the sleigh ride scene in Heartbeat . However the videos work best when a soap opera-style narrative is introduced, as with their flat-sitting escapades in the Stomp video, & the Four Weddings & a Funeral inspired video for their first number one single Tragedy.
