Background Information: Mothman Prophecies [Top] The Mothman Prophecies is a 1976 book by parapsychologist & Fortean John Keel, described as non-fiction. The books subject matter mostly concerns events in Point Pleasant, West Virginia during 1966 & 1967, focusing on sightings of a creature dubbed Mothman. It also includes Keels theories about UFOs, Men in Black, ghosts & other paranormal phenomena, as well as the December 15, 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge across the Ohio River from Point Pleasant to Gallipolis, Ohio. Throughout the book, Keel creates a reasonably coherent theory of the connection between all these events & phenomena. The veracity of the events described, especially those said to have been witnessed only by Keel himself, cannot be further established beyond reasonable doubt. However, Keels world view & theories are certainly interesting reading & unorthodox compared to those of most UFO & paranormal phenomena buffs. The book was the basis of a 2002 movie by the same name, starring Richard Gere as reporter of The Washington Post who is drawn to Point Pleasant to investigate a series of strange events. His body of work includes the films Powder & Jeepers Creepers. His directing career has been overshadowed by his conviction in 1989 for molesting a 12-year-old boy who had starred in his low-budget slasher movie Clownhouse. In 1995, the boy he molested publicly boycotted his film Powder, to bring attention to Salvas sexual misdeeds, which may have contributed to the films the less-than-stellar box office. Despite the scandal & Salvas pariah status in Hollywood emerging from it, his 2001 effort Jeepers Creepers was a notable box office success, as was its 2003 sequel. Salvas early work attracted the attention of Francis Ford Coppola, who produced Clownhouse, Powder, Jeepers Creepers & Jeepers Creepers 2. When asked in the press about producing the films of a sex offender, representatives from Coppolas production company said all that mattered to them was the films quality & box office earnings.
