Mission: Impossible is the name of an American television series which aired on the CBS network from September 1966 to September 1973. It was then returned to television for three seasons from 1988 to 1990, with Peter Graves reprising his original role as Jim Phelps. The series is known for its opening theme tune by Lalo Schifrin which accompanied the opening title sequence in which an animated burning fuse moved across the screen. The concept of the series was heavily influenced by spies & espionage fiction & its initial premise was centered around the existence of the Impossible Missions Force, a team of secret agents employed by the United States government & sent on covert missions to fight evil organizations, crime lords & dictators. Although a Cold War element was present throughout the series, the actual Cold War between the United States & the Soviet Union was not directly mentioned or referenced over the course of the series. Mission: Impossible was one of the best action blockbusters of the 1990s, deriving a quality unique amongst its peers from the tension between Brian De Palmas directorial stylisation & the overriding presence of its star & producer, Tom Cruise. Cruise plays Special Forces agent Ethan Hunt, disavowed as a traitor by his own superiors & forced to uncover the true mole to prove his innocence. The original 1960s television series provides not only the wonderful musical motif, but also the layered complexity of false realities & masked identities, which are revealed with the playful conjuring of a Russian doll.

This was Cruises last movie as an angst-ridden youth & he presents Ethan Hunt as caught between his heroic physical prowess & a trusting emotional naïvety that is painfully punctured by the treachery of those around him. Hollywood heavyweights Jon Voight & Ving Rhames are both excellent in support, while the remaining cast reads like an identikit of European cinema, including Emanuelle Beart, Kristin Scott Thomas & Jean Reno .

De Palmas trademark set-pieces include a giant exploding fishtank in Prague, a helicopter chase through the Channel Tunnel, and, most notably, a break-in to steal a vital disc from CIA headquarters in Langley. The moment in the latter when, in almost complete silence, Cruise dangles precariously from a cable & just catches a bead of sweat before it triggers the floor alarm is as sublimely exhilarating as any in American movies of the last 10 years.

Biography: Brian De Palma
[Top]
Brian De Palma is an American film director. De Palma is often cited as a leading member of the Brat Pack generation of film Directors & Actors including George Lucas & Steven Spielberg. For a time he was quite loyal in casting Amy Irving & Nancy Allen. His works explore themes of suspense, murder, obsession & psychiatric disorders, among others. De Palmas cinematic style is much indebted to that of Alfred Hitchcock to whom a number of films Dressed to Kill, Blow Out & Body Double are straight homages. He is famous for using techniques of split screen, split-diopter, process shots & long tracking shots for example, Snake Eyes opens with an uninterupted 25 minute Steadicam shot. Critics of DePalma accese him of being misogynistic & of emphasizing techical aspects of storytelling at the expense of human stories. Show Me a Strong Town & Ill Show You a Strong Bank.
