Background Information: Hype Williams
[Top]
Harold Hype Williams is an African American painter & music video & film director. He is notable for creating a number of groundbreaking & successful music videos for hip hop artists such as Craig Mack, LL Cool J, Nas, Street Dreams, Missy Elliott, Shes a Bitch, Busta Rhymes, TLC & Jay-Z. Williams began his career as an art director; one of his first jobs was designing the sets & costumes for the first TLC video, Aint 2 Proud 2 Beg, in 1991. He directed his first major music video, Can It All Be So Simple by The Wu-Tang Clan, in 1993. After the success of that & following video projects, Williams became the highest-paid & most requested urban music video director by the end of the 1990s. In 1998, Williams directed his first theatrical feature film, Belly ; the film was mildly recieved by both critics & audiences. Recent years have found him gravitating away from music video directing & planning to take on more feature projects, one of which is a projected remake of the 1960s anime Speed Racer.

Biography: WuTang Clan
[Top]
The Wu-Tang Clan is a pioneering hardcore rap group, originally from Staten Island, New York. There are nine original members of the Wu-Tang Clan. All of the nine members have released solo albums & have performed under several subprojects with other Wu-Tang Family members & musicians outside the Clan. the group would make each of them famous enough to launch multiple side projects & take over the hip-hop community through saturation of like-minded rappers. The founders of the Wu-Tang Clan were GZA, Ol Dirty Bastard & RZA. The GZA is the de facto leader of the group, as well as being widely regarded as the best lyricist among the group. The RZA is the producer of the groups albums, as well as many of their solo projects. The group quickly became known for hardcore violence, thumping, surreal beats & a warped sense of humor, all filtered through allusions to ancient Chinese folklore, mythic legend & martial arts film. The two cousins created their rap nom-de-plumes by mimicking the sound that the words Genius & Robert would make when scratched on a turntable.
