Background Information: The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen
[Top]
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series written by Alan Moore & illustrated by Kevin ONeill, published under the Americas Best Comics imprint of DC Comics. As of 2004 it comprises twelve issues, as well as a film adaptation of the first six-issue miniseries. The title could well be a play upon that of The League of Gentlemen, the Justice League of America comic books, or the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. The story takes place in 1898 in a fictional world where all of the characters & events from Victorian era adventure literature actually existed. The world the characters inhabit is one far more technologically advanced than our own was in the same year. This setting allows Moore & ONeill to insert in-jokes & cameos from many of the great works of Victorian fiction, while also making contemporary references & jibes.. The League is assembled by the British government to protect the empire from various menaces, including the criminal genius Fu Manchu & the Martians from H G Wells novel The War of the Worlds. Mina Murray of Bram Stoker s novel Dracula. Posters Of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen

The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr Jekyll , Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, the Invisible Man, Mina Harker , & the hunter Allan Quatermain , all assembled to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world.

Its hardly an original plot, but perhaps thats fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankensteins monster. It rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle, Nemos submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals. Its flashy, dumb, & completely incoherent. Fans of the original comic book will be disappointed.
