Biography: Danny Way [Top] Danny Way - Skateboarder At the age of six Danny was a Del Mar local. In 1986, at 11, he won the first competition. He was hooked up shortly afterwards by Hosoi & Vision. In 1988 at 14, Danny was sponsored by Powell Peralta & rode for the Bones Brigade. Six months later he quit to turn pro for H-Street. In 1990 he left H-Street to join Blind. Danny was named Skater of the Year by Thrasher Magazine in 1991. He left Blind in late 1991 to start a new company called Plan B with former H-Street co-founder Mike Ternasky. In 1994 Danny broke his neck due to a freak surfing accident. It took him a year to recover. He returned to skateboarding in 1995 to win the Tampa Pro Vert Competition Danny broke the world record for the highest air on a skateboard in 1997. He did a 12-foot kick flip & is the first skateboarder to drop out of a helicopter into a ramp. The feat was repeated in 1999 for MTV. Between 1999 & 2002 Danny underwent 7 surgeries, 5 on his knee & 2 on his shoulder. Late in 2002 Danny Way built the first Megaramp.
Editors Choice: View DVDology Biography: Laird Hamilton [Top] Laird Hamilton is reputedly one of the most influential big wave surfers as of 2004. According to those whove seen him in action, Hamilton is the best of the best at surfing particularly big waves. He has been seen surfing swells 35 feet tall, moving at speeds of 30 miles an hour. A big day for Laird are waves of up to 70 feet high, during which he reaches speeds up to 50 mph. Laird has been credited with innovating & popularizing tow-in surfing, which has met with mixed reactions from the surfing community, some of whom feel that it is cheating & polluting. Lairds defense is to say that tow-in surfing is the only way to catch the really big waves such as those seen at Jaws, off of Maui. Laird also makes it his bussiness to regularly clean up the beaches at his favorite spots, so he says There is a good feeling when we come back. Laird used tow-in to conquer the Tahitian surf spot Teahupoo. A wipeout in Teahupoo, a particularly hazardous shallow-water reefbreak southeast of Tahiti, means almost certain death. But Laird rode Teahupoo & it made him a legend.
