Background Information: Zoolander
[Top]
Zoolander is a movie based on a pair of short films, produced & directed by Ben Stiller for the VH1 Fashion Awards television show in 1996. The short films & the movie, feature a male model with a below-average intelligence. The title role is played by Ben Stiller & his agent is played by father Jerry Stiller. In Zoolander, the supremacy of Derek Zoolander of the male-modeling world is challenged by the up-and-coming Hansel, an acid -tripping, Great Spirit-worshiping throwback to the 60s. When his best friends are killed in a freak gasoline -fight accident, Derek announces that he is retiring from the male modeling profession. He returns to the coal mines where his father & brothers work, but soon finds himself desperately out of place. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the Prime Minister of Malaysia is working on abolishing child labor in his country. The evil world-wide organization which is the fashion industry is determined to retain Malaysia as a major source of cheap labor & is desperate to thwart the incumbent Prime Ministers election. DVD Extras: Zoolander comes to DVD in an anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen presentation that's clear & crisp with strong colours, which perfectly shows off the cartoonish style of the film. The audio is consistently sharp. Extra junkies will find plenty of material: deleted scenes, including an extended Mine scene & Winona Ryder trying to pick-up Hansel; amusing outtakes; & a great commentary from Ben Stiller with writers Drake Sather & John Hamburg. Best of all is the original VH1 Fashion Show skits which were the inspiration for the film.

Ben Stiller originally created the vacuous male model hero of Zoolander for the VH1 Fashion Awards. In his big-screen appearance, Stillers Derek Zoolander is New Yorks top model & proud creator of the tight-lipped facial expression Blue Steel. However, competition comes in the shape of equally empty-headed young buck Hansel , who wins the coveted male model of the year award, much to Dereks dismay. When Dereks vapid friends are then incinerated in an unfortunate petrol station incident he is left vulnerable & alone, perfect fodder for fashion designer supremo Mugatu to hatch a plot of Manchurian Candidate-sized proportions in which Derek is brainwashed into assassinating the Malaysian Prime minister at a fashion show. Derek enlists the help of investigative journalist & even Hansel himself in an attempt to thwart Mugatus devious plot.

Zoolander works thanks to the central performances. Stiller is endearing in his one-dimensional ineptitude, Wilson is shallow hippie cool personified, & there are some great cameos by the likes of David Duchovny as a Deep Throat-esque informer, Milla Jovovich as the eastern European sadomasochistic henchwoman & Jon Voight as Zoolanders coal mining dad. A constant parade of other celebs pop up throughout playing themselves. Admittedly its a one-joke film, but there are some classic scenes along the way & at its best Zoolander is an entertaining dig at an industry that takes itself far too seriously.

Biography: Ben Stiller
[Top]
Ben Stiller is an American comedian, actor & film director. He is possibly best known for his roles in the films Meet the Parents & Theres Something About Mary. Stiller is son of Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara, who are both veteran comedians & actors themselves. He was born in New York, New York on November 30, 1965 & raised with frequent visits from his familys Hollywood friends. Stiller wrote & appeared on Saturday Night Live as a featured performer in 1990. He went on to host & perform in a self-titled comedy sketch show on MTV & then The Ben Stiller Show on the Fox Network in 1992. The show lasted 12 episodes, but is considered by many to be one of the finest sketch comedy vehicles on television. The show also starred his frequent collaborators Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo & Bob Odenkirk. Stiller directed both Reality Bites & The Cable Guy, to generally mixed reviews. However, his most recent directorial effort, 2001s Zoolander was well-received, showing he could be a bankable star both behind the camera as well as in front of it. Posters Of Zoolander
