He became an assistant director & moved into directing in 1942, directing low-budget assignments for RKO & Republic. His early films noir such as Desperate, Rail Roaded, T-Men & Raw Deal are well regarded today, but Mann would soon excel in the Western genre, making a cycle of famous Westerns featuring James Stewart, beginning with Winchester 73, seen as one of the best Westerns ever made. In all these Westerns, Mann displayed an acute visual sensitivity towards the American Western landscape, effortlessly blending naturual vistas with human drama.
