And Now Youre Dead
Background Information: And Now Youre Dead [Top]
Editorial DVD Review [Top] And Now Youre Dead may nominally be a heist movie about two rival gangs out to steal a diamond, but in reality its an excuse for a series of exceptional action set-pieces as only Hong Kong cinema knows how to do. The film is actually set in Prague & features both a mixed Chinese & European cast, & some fairly horrendous dubbing. Fortunately no one is going to be watching for the dialogue, & the plot, assorted gangsters betray each other, while others find friendship & redemption, has been replayed endlessly since John Woos A Better Tomorrow . While Michael Wong makes an acceptable Chow Yun Fat substitute as professional thief Marty, Shannon Lees ruthless assassin is a revelation. She is Bruce Lees daughter, & having already appeared in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story & Blade , she delivers perhaps the toughest action heroine since Linda Hamiltons Sarah Connor in T2. Its a breathtaking performance, especially in a deliriously extended police station battle which recalls the original Terminator. Overlook the clumsy comic relief & the sub-Bond finale, & settle back to enjoy an insanely frenzied bloodbath packed with over-the-top stunts & razor-sharp martial arts.
Biography: Michael Wong [Top] Michael Fitzgerald Wong or Wong Man-Tak 王敏德, born in New York on April 16, 1965, is a Hong Kong based actor, director, singer & producer. Like many Chinese Americans, he is fluent in English language dialog but weak in Chinese, which is reflected in many of the characters he has portrayed. His most notable film is the 1998 film Beast Cops which won a Hong Kong Film Award with Wong in the lead role. As at 2004, he has appeared in over fifty films in twenty-one years, often in lead roles. Michael Wong grew up in New York, the son of restauranteur William Wong & Dutch American artist Connie Van Yserloo. Afer finishing high school, he left for Hong Kong to try his luck at acting. His brothers Russell Wong & Declan Wong would also become actors in the Hong Kong film industry. There were a number of significant factors working against Wongs eventual success in the Hong Kong film industry including an inability to speak Cantonese, no formal training in acting & no background in martial arts. He also lacked an entree into the tightly knit Hong Kong film indutry.
