Napalm Death - The DVD
Background Information: Napalm Death [Top] Napalm Death is a grindcore band that formed in Birmingham, England in 1981 by Miles Ratlegde & Nic Bullen, originally under the name of Civil Defence. They are credited by many with having invented the genre. The band have no original members left - indeed, by the first side of Scum, their debut album, the vocalist & bass player, Nic Bullen, was the only original member remaining. The band earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for recording the shortest song ever, You Suffer which is precisely 1,316 seconds long & consists of the lyrics You suffer - but why?. Members of Napalm Death have moved on to form bands such as Carcass, Godflesh, Final, Cathedral & Scorn. Originally, Napalm Death were called Civil Defence. They started in Birmingham, a working class city in the United Kingdom, in 1982, as a Punk rock band founded by high school student Nik Bullen, Miles Ratledge & some friends they met at school. In the begining Napalm Death were more inspired by early punk bands, anarchopunk & other underground acts such as Amebix & Crass.
Consumer DVD Review [Top] DVD compilation of the earache years of the ultimate grindcore band. 6 cheap & cheerful promo videos kick the compilation off, but the real bulk of the action is the 23-track gig from Salisbury 1990. This is a great gig with a great with the Harmony Corruption line-up, though some of the between song banter has been edited out in place of mini-interview segments. Of much rougher quality is a bonus gig from Nottingham 1989, this was from the first Gods of Grind tour & viewers of Carcasss Wake Up & Smell the... DVD will recognise the venue. While not as good quality as the Salisbury gig this is historically interesting as following the departure of Bill Steer & Lee Dorian this captures the band at a crucial make or break moment, with this being the first live performance from vocalist Barney Greenway & guitarist Jesse Pintado . Oh, & watch out for Morbid Angels Pete Sandoval at the side of the stage. Finally we have 2 very quick tunes from BBC Arenas infamous heavy metal programme with the Dorian/Steer line-up. Good stuff, but a pity they were unable to unearth the entire gig, & the interview segments that were broadcast on Area are missing here.
