Charlie Chaplin
Background Information: Charlie Chaplin [Top] Charles Spencer Chaplin was the most famous actor in early to mid Hollywood cinema & later also a notable director. a vagrant with the refined manners & dignity of a gentleman who wears a tight coat, oversized pants & shoes, a derby or bowler hat, a bamboo cane & his signature square mustache. Chaplin was one of the most creative personalities in the silent film era; he acted in, directed, scripted, produced & eventually scored his own films. He was born in Walworth, London, England to Charles, Sr. & Hannah Harriette Hill, both Music Hall entertainers. His parents separated soon after his birth, leaving him in the care of his increasingly-unstable mother. In 1896, she was unable to find work; Charlie & his older half-brother Sydney had to be left in the workhouse at Lambeth, moving after several weeks to Hanwell School for Orphans & Destitute Children. His father died an alcoholic when Charlie was 12 & his mother suffered a mental breakdown & was eventually admitted to the Cane Hill Asylum near Croydon. She died in 1928. Posters Of Charlie ChaplinConsumer DVD Review [Top] Here Charlie plays an old music hall entertainer who feels he has lost the ability to entertain people & make them laugh. Set in London but made in America, this was Chaplins last film made in the US. The theme is sensitive & yet at times quick & enthralling. Its an all English line up as Claire Bloom co-stars next to Charlie & plays her part with amazing grace & excellence. The end of the film sees Chaplin passing the flame of experience over to Claire. A great masterpiece from an English legend! A MUST buy!
