It was directed by Stephen Herek Ricky Hayman is a sales executive for a television shopping channel. His sales figures are flat & his job is under threat. G played by Eddy Murphy, is a charismatic guru who treats everything positively, thanking passers by who throw drinks for not using a can. When their paths cross by chance, Gs non materialist outlook at first annoys Ricky, but when G receives a spot on Rickys show, Ricky re-examines his own outlook & realises that his good is better & his better is best Posters Of Holy ManEditorial DVD Review [Top] Holy Man could have been a stellar satire in the tradition of Frank Capra, George Stevens, or Preston Sturges. Instead, this well-meaning romantic comedy was bluntly written by Tom Schulman & broadly directed by Stephen Herek, who fared better with his 1995 drama Mr. Hollands Opus. Their good intentions shine through, however, & while its easy to appreciate Eddie Murphys attempt to shift his career in a more substantial direction, Holy Man delivers some pointed criticism of commercialism & its deadening effect on spiritual well-being.
Murphy plays an enlightened eccentric named G who rises to national celebrity when hes enlisted to host a TV shopping network. Jeff Goldblum & Kelly Preston play the shows producer & marketer, respectively, & their formulaic romance provides the movies lackluster subplot. With skyrocketing ratings & a flurry of cameos by celebrity hucksters , G delivers preachy platitudes urging America to stop buying & embrace the finer values of life & love . To its credit, Holy Man occasionally achieves a delicate balance of comedy & commentary, & receptive viewers will be grateful, at a time when crude comedies rule the box office, that someone bothered to try. For that reason, this flawed movie deserves to be seen. Biography: Eddie Murphy [Top] Eddie Murphy is an African-American comedian & actor. Murphy began his comedy career at the young age of 19, as a performer on NBC s Saturday Night Live television show. His characters include a parody of Buckwheat from the Little Rascals & of Fred Rogers. Murphy later starred in many comedies including the Beverly Hills Cop series, Trading Places & Coming to America. He is a versatile voice actor & voiced the donkey in the Shrek series & the dragon in Disney s Mulan. In many of his films, he plays multiple roles in addition to his main character. A perfect example of this is The Nutty Professor, a remake of the Jerry Lewis classic in which Murphy plays several members of the Klump family as well as Sherman Klumps arrogant alter ego, Buddy Love. His early comedy was racy, akin to Richard Pryor, whom Murphy says was the one that wanted to get into comedy. Characterized by excessive swearing & making fun of gays, singers & others, Murphy became, in a sense, the Pryor of the 1980s.
