Paul McCartney - Wingspan
Background Information: Paul Mccartney [Top] Sir James Paul McCartney, MBE, better known as Paul McCartney, is a British musician, composer & producer. He was born at Walton Hospital, located in northern Liverpool near his teenage home, where his mother had worked as a nurse. His father was a professional trumpet player & gave the young Paul a vital early grounding in music. The early death of his mother Mary from breast cancer when he was fourteen was a formative influence on his life & created an additional bond between him & John Lennon, whose mother had also died prematurely. McCartney first rose to fame as the bassist, pianist, guitarist, singer & songwriter for the Beatles. He was initially invited to join John Lennons band the Quarrymen as a guitarist, but he eventually took over bass guitar duties in the early Sixties, after the groups formative stint at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, replacing original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, who remained in Hamburg when the rest of the group returned to Liverpool. It was interesting to see Pauls daughter, Mary, interviewing her dad, which added a certain personal element to the programme. It was done in chronological order & started with the breakup of the Beatles & Paul & Lindas wedding. The video details the 10 years of Wings, while also showing many home videos of Pauls family life.
Biography: Denny Laine [Top] Denny Laine is a British songwriter & musician, best known for his roles as former guitarist & lead singer of The Moody Blues and, later, co-founder of Wings. Laine is of Romany descent & was educated at Yardley Grammer School, in Birmingham. His first solo performance was at the age of twelve. Having taken up the guitar as a boy, under the influence of jazz legend Django Reinhardt, Laine began his career as a professional musician fronting Denny & the Diplomats, the members of which included future Electric Light Orchestra drummer Bev Bevan. In 1964, Laine abandoned Denny & the Diplomats to join the Moody Blues, singing their first big hit, Go Now. His tenure with the band was limited, however & after a number of comparative failures, Laine quit. After leaving Moody Blues, he formed Denny Laines Electric String Band, which featured Denny, Trevor Burton & Viv Prince, also featuring electrified strings in a format not dissimilar to what Electric Light Orchestra would later attempt.
