Revengers Tragedy
Background Information: Revengers Tragedy [Top] Revengers Tragedy is a film version of the play The Revengers Tragedy by Thomas Middleton, first published anonymously in 1606. It was directed by Alex Cox & adapted for the screen by Coxs fellow Liverpudilan, Frank Cottrell Boyce. The movie stars Christopher Eccleston as Vindici, Eddie Izzard as Lussurioso, Derek Jacobi as the Duke, Diana Quick as the Duchess, Andrew Schofield as Carlo, Carla Henry as Castiza, Marc Warren as Supervacuo & Justin Salinger as Ambitioso. Revengers Tragedy was shot & edited in Liverpool with an almost entirely local crew, including cinematographer Len Gowing, costumer Monica Aslanian, makeup designer Lesley Brennan & assistant director Kim Ryan. Coxs traditional production designer, Cecilia Montiel, prepared a visual strategy which was executed by her co-designer Remi Vaughan-Richards. Cottrell Boyces script mixes the original Jacobean language with modern asides & sets Middletons story in a societally-collapsing dystopia where vendettas & the crude exercise of power are the norm. The producers were Margaret Matheson & Tod Davies.
Consumer DVD Review [Top] Anyone who is studying or merely interested in Jacobean tragedy should see this movie. Christopher Ecclestons emotive performance really puts meaning to the essence of revenge tragedy. This film has echoes of Baz Luhrmanns Romeo & Juliet, fast & modern, it does for Middleton what Baz did for Shakespeare. A play brought to life. A definate must!
Biography: Christopher Eccleston [Top] Christopher Eccleston is a British stage, television & film actor, best known for his roles in several high profile prestige films & television series. As a child his ambition was to play football for his beloved Manchester United, but he found himself to be a much better actor than he was a footballer & inspired by television dramas such as Boys from the Blackstuff, he took to acting as his profession. He trained at the Central School of Speech & Drama & first came to public attention as Derek Bentley in the 1991 film Let Him Have It, based on true events. However, it was a regular role in the TV series Cracker – culminating in his characters dramatic death in the second series – that made him a recognisable figure in the UK. He appeared in the low-budget Danny Boyle film Shallow Grave in 1994, in which he co-starred with another up-and-coming young British actor by the name of Ewan McGregor.

He has a very individual style of rambling, surreal monologue. He has turned his attention to acting as well as maintaining his demanding touring schedule. Izzard describes himself as an executive or action transvestite & as a male tomboy. He regularly cross-dresses both on & off stage & makes it clear that cross-dressing is, for him, not a sexual thing – he simply enjoys wearing make-up & clothing which is traditionally perceived in the West as female-only. He was born in Aden, Yemen, as the youngest son of John & Ella Izzard. He grew up in Belfast, Skewen & Bexhill-on-Sea. His mother died in March, 1968. Eddie Izzard briefly attended the University of Sheffield. He has engaged in campaigning work, including opposing the closure of the departments of Drama & Languages, Linguistics & Translation at the University of East Anglia & supporting the further integration of the UK into the European Union. As part of his integration campaigning, he was one of the first people to spend a Euro in London.
