Romeo + Juliet is a 1996 film adaptation of Shakespeare s play, Romeo & Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo & Claire Danes as Juliet. Other members of the cast include This version is a transposition of Shakespeares play into the present time, with swords replaced by guns, skyscrapers instead of castles & MTV -like action. However, the movie uses Shakespeares original dialogue, albeit with certain scenes rearranged. The story takes place in Verona Beach, California, styled after Los Angeles & a fictional place in the Mojave Desert called Mantua. The film differs from the play in that Paris is not killed. While perhaps not the defining moment in the making of Leonardo DiCaprio’s career, his appearance in this dazzling take on William Shakepeare’s Romeo & Juliet back in 1996 did the careers of both Clare Danes & himself no harm at all. Perhaps the real star of the show here though is director Baz Luhrmann, who employs a frenetic, at times downright-brilliant style to the age-old tale of tale of star-crossed lovers. Luhrmann would go on to make Moulin Rouge a few years’ later.

From the off, his take on Romeo & Juliet explodes unpredictably onto the screen, bubbling with vision & originality, accompanied throughout by an excellent score & soundtrack that rightly spawned two spin-off CDs. There are sacrifices made along the way to support Luhrmann’s vision though, with the text being stripped down to leave the core of the story in tact, & that’s just one of a number of complaints that Shakespeare purists may have.

And yet, perhaps more than any other attempt to bring the work of the Bard to the screen of late, this is an extremely accessible entry-point to Shakepeare’s work. That it’s also by turns breathtaking, dazzling & a sheer joy to watch doesn’t harm its cause either. The two leads are charming, the support cast backs them up superbly, & the end result is one of the most interesting visual treats that Hollywood mustered up throughout the 1990s.,

Claire Catherine Danes is an American film actress. She had her breakthrough as protagonist Angela Chase in the groundbreaking 1994 teenage drama series My So-Called Life, for which she won a Golden Globe Award & received an Emmy nomination. Afterwards she turned down the female lead in Titanic, but shortly afterward starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in William Shakespeares Romeo & Juliet. When she was 9 she decided to start taking acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Studio. For many years, she & Australian singer Ben Lee had been dating, but their relationship ended in 2003. Leonardo DiCaprio is an American actor. He was born Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio in Los Angeles, California, the son of George DiCaprio & Irmalin Idenbirkin. His name allegedly came about because his pregnant mother was standing in front of a Leonardo da Vinci painting at a museum in Italy when he kicked, which made her decide to name him after the famous artist. Leos father, a distributor of comic books, is Italian-American & his mother, a former legal secretary, is German-American. His parents divorced when he was a year old. He grew up in Echo Park. At age five, he appeared on his favorite TV series, Romper Room & was almost fired for misbehaving. He attended John Marshall High School in Los Angeles. He was rejected by an agent early in his career for having a name that sounded too foreign, suggesting that it should be changed to Lenny Williams. But DiCaprio refused. His acting career began in 1990 when he was cast in the role of Garry Buckman on the TV comedy/drama series Parenthood, where he met his best friend, actor Tobey Maguire. Baz Luhrmann is an Australian film director. His films are distinguished by their flamboyant & colourful theatricality. Strictly Ballroom, starring Paul Mercurio & Tara Morice. Romeo & Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Claire Danes. Moulin Rouge!, starring Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor. He has also directed the opera La Bohème. Luhrmann was working on a biographical film about Alexander the Great, tentatively starring DiCaprio & Kidman, but the release of Oliver Stone s film on the same subject in 2004 eventually persuaded him to shelve the project. His current project is in development, but its subject matter remains unknown. Baz Luhrmann has listed Bollywood films as a major influence on his work, especially on Moulin Rouge! Luhrmann is also credited with a 1999 UK number one single entitled Everybodys Free. Luhrmann married Catherine Martin, the production designer on all of his films, on 26 January 1997.
